Re: Hello

Hi Duncan,

I think you're the only active member who's been on this forum longer than I have. I'm not nearly as active as I used to be so it's good to see an OG again.

Peace.

Re: Radically new drum tuning tech

People crack me up.

I specifically stated that the idea wasnt new but that the engineering in this instance appears to be well above the previous incarnations.

Yet still people reply with...

Radically new drum tuning tech

I can’t believe no one has mentioned this already.

The concept of tuning a drum with only one knob has been around forever.

These guys have done it better than anyone else by far.

I’d love...

Re: Cymbal cancer warnings

I own a business in aerospace metals.

The cymbal must contain a certain amount of heavy metals, such as chromium, nickel, or cadmium.

Depending on the region and the attorneys they might either...

Re: non-specific criticism

I second that. I once had a singer tell me “I want the kick to go Boosshh” in a rehearsal room. As if I had a full a triggered midi setup with me at his rehearsal.

Also, consider the source when...

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

I did a session last year and the engineer was pretty well known for his drum sounds

After he spent a while talking abut how he did it, I asked “What about cymbals”
His reply: “ They pretty much...

Re: Denting drumheads

Only a neanderthal with no sense of chops dents a head.

It takes zero rebound and a sharp angle of attack to do it.

Re: Is practicing heel-down worth it?

If you’re asking about fast double bass then the majority of your practice should be heel up.

Yeah, I know it’s not politically correct to say it but ask yourself how many modern fast double bass...

Re: Double bass setup?

I honestly don’t think any double bass player has bothered with any of this.

The vast majority of players use identical drums. A very small percentage use different diameters. Those players tend...

Re: time keeping/ guitarists

It’s shouldn’t be so complex.

If they don’t like you counting in a song and you’ve already recorded them going way off tempo then they just aren’t any good as players. Sorry but that’s the truth....

Re: Rick Beato -- Is the man!

Yeah, wiseass. Do you honestly think that Adele's performance on that song was anything less than stellar? Have you actually listened to the song and read the lyrics?

It's not Ace of Base I tell...

Re: Dave DiCenso Live Performance at DCP - Video

Dave is everything I look for in a masterful player. The guy has played the gamut of gigs, from Cro-Mags to Hiromi in addition to being an incredible teacher.

Bill Bachman used to say that Dave...

Re: Rick Beato -- Is the man!

Those songs and artists you mentioned are all great.

Especially Adele, “Someone like you” is one of the most passionate vocal performances ever recorded.

Great doesn’t just mean songs you liked...

Re: Do 3/4 and 6/8 ‘flow’ better for you?

I’ve always felt that the reason for any time sig to feel worse or better was within me and not in the meter.

Re: Do your doubles sound like singles?

I asked Tommy Igoe this a few years back and he said that the double stroke notes should all have equal volume. That’s where the “sounding like singles” things comes from because weak doubles will...

Re: Double bass drum work

Gym work is great and will definitely help especially with stamina but you must develop the ability to shift between legs and ankle motion. Don't fall into the trap of muscling it all out.

Re: Overqualified For The Gig

I cracked up once he kicked into the double bass. Trey Parker and Matt Stone couldn't have written it better.

Re: I wonder if Neil Peart will ever play again?

It's true. Neil is done. I kick myself for not seeing R40.

Frankly, it's amazing he continued playing after losing his wife and daughter the way he did.

I've always thought there was a bit of...

Re: Hey Joe: Great drumming or overplaying?

NO NO NO NO NO.

Most of the greats in any field made their first great work at a young age. From Einstein to Tony Williams.

Old rock stars suck, their best work is always the earlier stuff....

Re: Jojo Mayer - Questions

It's never the pedal, the sticks, the drums or the cymbals. It's always YOU.

Don't worry about gear. The manufacturers are always trying to make it seem as if the new thing they have is the answer...
