Re: Practicing with a mirror

My teaching studio has two corner mirrors so the students (and I) can see their technique from various angles. It keeps me from having to get up and walk to each side of the student, which can be a...

Re: Exercises/rudiments -vs- or solos/excerpts

Many students are comfortable with playing individual rudiments, but not as comfortable transitioning between rudiments and other rhythms.

Genazvale, I know from your previous posts that you have...

Re: Do your doubles sound like singles?

I would start with alternating between singles and doubles (a measure or two of each). Then, check out pg. 30 and 31 of Master Studies (book 1).

For solidifying doubles, try inverting the roll...

Re: Do your doubles sound like singles?

Joe Morello (in lessons) would say, “close your eyes.” He would then start playing and ask what it sounded like. I would reply, “single strokes.” I would open my eyes, and see that he would really...

Re: Got your old method books?

I have filing cabinets full of drum books. Between years of buying them, and now reviewing them for Percussive Notes, I have quite a collection. After speaking to my insurance agent, I realized that...

Re: Wrist Twisters vs Stick Control

Hi Genazvale,

I wrote The Level System (https://www.amazon.com/Level-System-Natural-Developing-Dynamics/dp/0739086642/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1451586592&sr=8-1&keywords=Level+system+Jeff+johnson)...

Re: Mastering the Tables of Time

I agree with all of this. Great book and extremely good guy. Mastering the Tables of Time won best drum book of the year in the 2009 Modern Drummer Readers Poll.

Re: How to shake that tambourine!

You mentioned playing it with your foot. Are you using a tambourine pedal like the one in this video?

Re: Requirements for my big band audition

No problem at all. I enjoyed it too. I think the concepts of “thinking like a horn player” really helped. Think about singing or vocalizing the horn hits. A staccato, eighth-note hit can be...

Re: Requirements for my big band audition

Todd is correct. Since you mentioned that the sightreading is from the existing repertoire, you will be given a big band chart (or section of a chart) which is to be interpreted.

The sightreading...

Re: Rudiments in daily practice or something else?

It’s great that you are studying with a student of Stone. There aren’t many of his students left, with Joe Morello and Vic Firth’s passing.

Barry James studied with Stone. Barry is living in...

Re: Requirements for my big band audition

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I just want to give you something to think about... Do you think your competition for the audition has been studying and taking lessons? What about the people who...

Re: Requirements for my big band audition

If you’ve never read charts before, you need to start now. Is your teacher working on the audition requirements with you? If so, he/she should definitely prepare you to read charts, especially if...

Re: What sources should I study from for sight reading?

I usually would agree with Tony, since many school jazz bands (especially middle school bands) unfortunately play mainly pop stuff like Uptown Funk and Crazy Train instead of big band jazz tunes. ...

Re: What sources should I study from for sight reading?

I own just about every book you could find on big band drumming, and this one is the best. Don’t think twice about the price. It’s worth every penny. My student made All-State Jazz Band two years...

Re: Triplets NOT in groupings of 3 or 6 beats. How do you feel the bar line??? HELP!

Joe Morello had a great exercise for that. You can also experiment with playing the stickings from pg. 5-7 stick control as triplets. The four 8th note phrases will outline a half note triplet. ...

Re: Hand Motions Exercise

Yes, the Accents and Rebounds exercises are great. Morello also utilized the motions with pages 8-19 of Master Studies.

Re: Eighth note notation (beaming)

That is the default on my version of Finale as well. If I want to beam 8th notes in groups of two, I need to go to Document Options and change the beaming.

Re: Elbows; like a chicken or straight jacket

Joe Morello often said that you should be in a relaxed position when you play.

Think about this:

When you relax and watch tv, are your arms stuck out in a chicken wing position- probably not....

Re: Using the drumming motions with accent exercises

You are referring to a concept known as the level system. Many of us use that style of accenting. For paradiddles (and other accented rudiments) you can check out John Wooten's rudiment videos on...
