Re: non-specific criticism

Some people will criticize something or someone, and offer no way to improve the situation, or even a specific thought about what, exactly, is the problem. I call these people #$$holes.

Groove is...

Re: Sonor vintage vs Gretsch Brooklyn vs Yamaha Hybrid maple

A Maple Custom is heavy to lug around? You've obviously never owned Sonor Phonics haha!

But seriously, the YESS mounts and the lugs are small. The hoops are on the heavy side, but the shells...

Re: Sonor vintage vs Gretsch Brooklyn vs Yamaha Hybrid maple

It’s hard to overstate the sound of the Brooklyns. Gretsch really nailed it. To me they sound like the the love child of old Ludwigs and Yamaha recording customs; they have focus, dynamic range, and...

Re: Best budget recording drums

Solid advice. Let the students bring their own cymbals and pedal. You would easily spend more than half your budget on cymbals worthy of a recording studio.

Buy a set with a 20 or 22 inch bass...

Re: Middle tom doesn't resonate

HEY!!!

Ok, so I just received a used Yamaha kit with YESS mounts (22, 10, 12, 16). It was disassembled for shipping, so I had to re-mount the YESS mounts, put new clear Amabassadors on the top...

Re: Is practicing heel-down worth it?

Yes, the dribbling is due to your undeveloped technique. Do not bury the beater, unless doing so is a musical choice, and not an excuse for crap technique. The dribbling will go away as your muscles...

Re: Who the Heck??

That’s the late Jam Master J. Should be in the liner notes.

Re: How Much Better is Yamaha Tour Cust vs Absolute Hybrid???

Are you into sparkle finishes? The Absolute Hybrids have a painted/lacquer sparkle finish (not a wrap, which is glued onto the shell), and they are just glorious. Not even wrapped sparkles are as...

Re: Namm 2019 rumors

Agreed that current rods do tune just fine. But I'm not a Tune Bot user. If I were a high profile drummer, I might instruct my tech to use one, and to return the kit to the same frequencies each...

Re: Namm 2019 rumors

Remaining in tune isn't the feature being touted (for that we have lug locks, coated T-rods, etc.). DW's literature says "exacting", which is pretty vague. Even so, here's a way to test the idea:

Re: Interesting Observation Regarding Drum Quality and Sound Preferences

Good to know! I’ve often wondered about C&Cs.

I have a very similar Ludwig set up in champagne sparkle: 22, 12, 16 that I bought used. They had the worst heads and tuning when I got them, but now...

Re: Namm 2019 rumors

Certain designs belong to certain models. Gibsons have the pearl-ish crown shape; Fenders have rounded silver pegs. Guitar players might look out for the shape, but usually they're more concerned...

2. Small mixer -- 4 channels, with a minimum of two XLR inputs...

Re: Is practicing heel-down worth it?

So. Much. Yes. Think about how football players practice ballet maneuvers in order to develop agility and control. Same idea here. You have no idea the finesse, control, and strength that will come...

Re: Exercises/rudiments -vs- or solos/excerpts

Only on a very superficial level. A solo will refine your ability to switch into and out of a give rudiment or combination, or introduce material that isn't strictly "a rudiment". Solos are a deep...

Re: Looking for Jazz Drum Set

Yamaha Stage Custom, with an 18" kick, about $500:

Re: Zoom Q2N (Camera) questions.

I don't rely on batteries for the Zoom -- battery life is pretty good, but just short enough to piss you off, haha! Better to get an extension cord and connect it to an outlet, especially if you're...

Re: Space Aliens at the local bar

No doubt the band needs a large repertoire, but frequently, you get lead vocalists whose command of the material is shaky at best.

A bit off topic -- I was in a bar with a cover band (forget their...

Re: Space Aliens at the local bar

Hahahahaha! My thanks to you personally for that!

Sitting in already has enough variables — now we have to endure every “singer” in the place? This kind of thing hastens the extinction of live...

Re: Why have I suddenly forgotten a kick drum technique?

+1.

It's probably just fatigue or exhaustion. Being dehydrated can affect muscles in strange ways, too. Your foot/leg muscles may be in the middle of some growth, too. Keep practicing, but, as...

Re: Considering these three kits. Any advice would be appreciated.

Ah, ok! That would make them sonically more similar to Gretsch Brooklyns rather than USA Customs — noticeably more open and lively. Still, they’d be quite different from a Tour Custom.

Personally...

Re: Considering these three kits. Any advice would be appreciated.

What sizes and configuration are you thinking?

Of the three kits, the DW has the worst tom mounting hardware. It's not bad, but Yamaha's mounting hardware is great, and the Renown's mounting...

Re: Curious about tuning to actual notes

For me it's not necessarily the notes, but the intervals, between toms. I like them a fourth apart (or a fifth, depending on which note is the "root"). This way, the toms really cooperate together to...

Re: Returning Drummer Aches.

Any of the downward dog type poses, stuff where you're on your hands and knees, are good for "threading" the nerves along your back and sides, preventing/mitigating sciatica. The shoulder and neck...

Re: Analogue to digital - the journey begins.

Well, small to medium analog mixers tend to not have enough aux sends for this type of stuff. The available auxes get eaten up by monitor mixes and effects. You're absolutely right: analog or digital...
