Re: DW Finishply
I have an 18" DW bass drum, and it is double-seamed along the bottom two rows of lugs. It's quite common with modern wrapped shells, as Gruntersdad pointed out, 54 inches is the indutsrywide common...

Re: Double bass used in professional situation....
If the music calls for it, go for it. I've generally thought of double bass as a parallel to having two hands on every other part of the kit, so why deny the footies, right? Now, slamming a pair of...

Re: Tama Star = $$$$
That has to be MSRP. I just figured the math on a DW lacquer kit in those sizes and it came to 8500 dollars. That puts my street price at about 5950 after dealer discount and local sales tax. Tama...

Re: Hey look, a distraction
I always thought that being totally "geeked" about drums was the only way to be any damn good at it. I've never understood the idea of a musician who can really play their ass off, but doesn't know...

Re: The Minimal Setup
****WARNING! CLICHE ALERT!...CLICHE ALERT!****
It's the drummer, not the drumkit. I once saw Matt Halpern DESTROYING on a 3-pc kit and at that moment I knew a good drummer is as much a magician as...

Re: Drum Workshop Worth The Cash?
Just had this same experience with my DWs, replacing all of the coated/clears with Remo Clear Ambassadors. I should have done that from the start.

Re: 10", 13", 16" Tom configuration?
I use 10/13/16 (often with an 8" tom at the start, if the gig has four tom mics). It's a good way to hit a wide tonal range with fewer drums. The soundman will thank you.

Re: Odd Sized Toms
Ludwig and others offered 7x11" toms around that time. Maybe the shell was a bit undersized? I read that there was a bit more inconsistency in that area until Remo and Evans started making synthetic...

Re: Bang for your buck. How significant?
I bought my DWs for their sonic value and that "personal resonance" mentioned earlier. It always felt good to play a DW kit whenever I sat down to one, so I bit the bullet and got some. No regrets....

Re: DW Performance Shell packs w/o Bass Drums??
DW recently added the 12" to the list of available add-ons, so you can do a true component-based kit without the pre-packs. As for their logic, I think they are concerned that a full line of...

Re: Odd Sized Toms
I actually bought a quartet of 11" hoops for a couple of different projects. Keller told me they can do 11" shell stock, though orders for it are rare. You can get 24" length Keller tubes from...

Re: ID this PDP kit
Based on the "pinched turret" lugs and the logo, I would peg them as pre-2005 low-level drums about equivalent to the EZ/Z5 drums that came later. Early PDP drums were pretty troublesome until about...

Re: Cymbal Tightening
Bozzio keeps his plates pretty tight, but he really has to. With that many cymbals that close together, one hit would set the whole thing off without tight pad spacing. Besides, Radias were designed...

Re: What is classified as professional gear?
Pro-grade minimum for me would be a DW Performance Series kit on DW9000 Series hardware with 5000 or 9000 pedals, Attack or Remo heads, Sabian RADIA, Paragon or HH series cymbals and Vic Firth sticks...

Re: Buying new drum kit - mid-range price
Here's a checklist that I would use regardless of brand name.
1. Look at the other drum sizes and options. A 12/16/22 kit might be OK right now, but what if you want to expand or shift drum sizes....

Re: How do you approach writing your drum part?
Since I write the fundamentals of the song first, I have the chance to hear the whole thing without drums for a bit, and that allows me to dream up a basic sketch of the drum part. That becomes the...

Their Facebook guru said that the Design Series drums will be offered as a shell pack consisting of 8x10, 9x12 and 14x16" toms, a 14" snare and 18x22" bass drum. Add-ons will be 7x8, 12x14 and...

Re: What type of toms are these?
I'll bet those toms are patterned after Phil Collins' concert tom setup. Keep those tones in your head, and then imagine them doing that iconic fill from "In The Air Tonight".

Re: Jazzers, 16x18 or 14x18 bass drum?
If you're aiming for jazz, then a 14x18 is probably better. 16" and deeper bass drums are more of a modern design aimed at pop and rock music, and the tighter, "clickier" kick sound that goes with.

Re: Is it just the generation gap?
I think it's to do with the kind of drumming you grew up with at first, and then it settles into what you think you need for the music vs. what you are willing to carry to gigs. Someone in their 20s...
