Re: The power of smiling

Absolutely.. I know sometimes the tendency is to have a stern look especially if you're playing something complicated or if you're tired... but I try to remind my self to always look relaxed even if...

Re: What makes a pro kit?

Bumwrap?? What the heck is that .. Lol!
In any case, here is one list from the web that categorizes different types of kits.. not sure if it's based off the other one I'd seen several years ago but...

Re: What makes a pro kit?

I'm surprised by the answers here.. the question is what makes a Pro kit.. not Pro drummer.. there's a big difference in kit quality from entry level to top of the line... and it makes big difference...

Re: Tuning woes

Yes.. 'tin' is what you get if cranking the reso to an extreme tension. Similar to cranking the batter to an extreme.. then it's just 'dead'. I think most drummers use something between the medium...

Re: extreme tom angles and snare tilt

I saw a jazz drummer in NYC that played that way - except the snare was up higher around his waist on an extreme angle. He had to cross his left trad hand 'over' his right in order to hit the snare!...

Re: Tuning woes

Google the Drum Tuning Bible (http://eric.frap.net/sa/bible/profsound.shtml)... a ton of GREAT info in there. Very organized and thorough - I've relied on that guide for years.. it works!

Re: Is "pocket" what you play or how you play it?

Yup! eg. If the drummer is constantly behind the beat it can sometimes make the band sound like it's dragging - and not in the pocket. There's something about smacking the beat in just the right...

Re: Cover of Drums Etc Magazine!

Cool! I always pick up a copy when I'm in Steve's Music Store.. and Carnavan - driven through there many times in the summer. Beautiful country around there!

Re: BPM recall ability

Bermuda speaks the truth! I use familiar tunes as well as signposts.. my favourite example is "Brown Eyed Girl' at 150bpm. I'm sure we've all had it burned into our heads!
I started doing it many...

Re: Basic Paradiddle Combinations

Yes those are lot's of fun.. the inversions and sextuplet parradiddles are what that Benny Greb fill might have been inspired from.. they create a cool phrasing over the bar depending on the...

Re: Help with Benny Greb Fill!!!!

Nice fill! 'Just sextepluts' plus some Benny Greb magic Lol! The pattern reminds me a bit of playing paradidles as a triplet or sextuplet phrasing. With foot substitutions and toms thrown in.
Nice...

Re: Let's Talk Snare Drums

How do you like the Oak Custom? I was looking at one the other day online for 250$.. it looks like it has a 14 x 7" deep shell and is in great shape. Worth taking a look at?

Re: Let's Talk Snare Drums

I can't even read those numbers without being confused! Whatever.. I have the 6 1/2 "deep Dyna COB and had the 5 " Supra. Like I said , I haven't played either in a long time.. So long I'd...

Re: Another *&^%$# Bar Owner

That's one reason why I hate booking gigs.. the communication is often a major hassle. Either the booking manager is not available or can't provide information etc. etc. I tend to look for bands that...

Re: Let's Talk Snare Drums

I've played a lot of snares in my time.. one thing that always surprizes me is the mythical qualities given to the Supraphonics. I played a 5 1/4x14" Supra in high school in a variety of bands.. and...

Re: Who uses Moongel?

Lot's of Pros use it or other damping techniques as just another tool in the box to dial in the sound they're after. Used sparingly, I find it can help focus the sound a bit. Cut into small strips.....

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

When I saw the trailer I wasn't sure if it was a comedy or a drama.. as the teacher was so over the top it looked like a spoof of all those sports movies where someone rises from the ashes to conquer...

Re: Singing and playing?

I'm just a background singer, but I continually practice singing techniques to improve... finding the perfect pitch and tone, knowing when to jump to the O-voice, breathing, head, chest, gut voice.....

Re: When soundmen attack

I cringe at changing kick drum heads.. It's a PIA..and too much hassle to cart around extra kick heads to a gig..

but on the flip side i've had a grumpy sound guy complain about a Kickport i'm...

Re: Country drummers!

Agreed - nothing shallow at all! I'm constantly on the lookout for great modern country tunes that have lyrics that aren't about trucks and dixie cups. Maybe that's why Miranda Lambert cleans up at...

AT one point I studied all of Steve Jordans grooves and licks.. a great way to 'up your game' as he is chock full of tasty fills and funky riffs - whatever the genre.
Here's the Letterman...

ya.. That's what I'm talking about! I respect other peoples musical choices, but some of the 'real' country that some have referenced just does nothing for me.. Lyle stills bores me to death and the...
