Re: Musician vs Artist

There are musicians and artists, much like their are painters and artists.

A guy who paints the walls inside your house calls himself a painter. I think a drummer who plays cover band gigs should...

Re: Fast doubles for multiple measures

I see your point. But every bpm is very subtle. Yes the difference between 140 and 200 is different, but the difference between say 160 and 162 wouldn't be much. so as you increase and get it tight...

Re: Some blast beat progress

Sounds like you are being smart and listening to advice given around here a bit :).

Try the 146 after and i bet you feel relaxed. If you can go a few minute you must have been relaxed for the...

Re: Fast doubles for multiple measures

Slow down, play relaxed, and if you get sloppy or tense slow down some more... if 180-200 is your "MAX" that means you are probibly clean and precise at 140-160 I bet.

I play CLEAN perfect doubles...

Re: 16th notes on Hi Hat

If you practice, and play at speeds near your top where you stay relaxed the "moeller" is something that happens on it's own. I have never WORKED on it.

Push pull and using your fingers will help...

You have 15 posts here, does that mean you are new to drums? It could also mean you just joined the site.

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

It's tough to say how many hours because I'd do it in 30-45 minute chunks. and I also kept sanding off WAY to much clear coat, re applying it, and repeating making more work for myself.

If I...

Re: Can you be a good drummer with bad math skills?

absolutely. If you can count to 4, or count to 3,5,7,8,9,12 your fine.

It's not like I pull out a calculator when I'm subdividing adding up fractions haha.

the first many years of drumming is...

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

I did something interesting the other day. I bought new heads for 4 snares.

1 brass, 1 steel, 1 pearl reference 20 ply wood, and a 1960's ludwig.

I tuned each one separate and after I hit them...

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

I wouldn't have done it on a new masterworks or sq2. lol

but it's hard to REALLy wreck a kit.. I mean, too much clear, sand it off, stain too dark, sand it down a litte. Even if you sand too...

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

I was looking into buying all new hardware and WOW is that not cheap. Especially in Canada.

Had I had bought a more expensive kit, or a nice vintage kit worth a few bucks I would have. I had no...

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

That isn't bad at all actually.

I spent more on the polyurethane for this project.
I like the thicker coating personally. I'll have to try both

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

You are correct. I googled some images and Luaun looks right, it was also pretty rough, sanding helped but it took alot of clear to smooth it out. It is birch on the inside I believe. Whatever they...

Re: Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

I wanted to keep it inexpensive as this is an OLD kit and the hardware was a bit beat up. the before pictures didn't do it justice how gross it was.

Next time I'll use tung oil instead of...

Stain and clear coat on an old beat up kit with video

Here is a video I made of the progress on a 1980's Pearl Export kit.
This was my first time doing this and clear coating was a real pain, but I'll be better next time I think.

It was beat up, the...

Re: Double strokes with a shortboard

the pedals do make it easier, the longboards give better leverage and the good drive shaft, and direct drive keep the left pedal accurate for the double, but you are right it CAN be done.

Tighten...

Re: Weaker hand problem

Besides just saying hours and hours of practice for many years, the short answer is use it as much as your dominant hand.

rudiments are the best thing you can do.. start with the easy ones,...

Re: Double strokes with a shortboard

EVERYTHING effects this technique. Beater height even makes a difference. and weight... if the beaters are lower or higher it will change the feel and distance between the double and I use it to...

Re: Double strokes with a shortboard

I'll try and make an "updated" one in the next week or so. Since these videos I have got my springs slightly tighter and beaters further back making it less trigger reliant. It's like improving...

Re: Sound blending or replacement

haha, you're not wrong as it's really bad in metal. The difference is, that the samples chosen are super clean, produced, steven slate type samples with next to no dynamics making it this way to...

Re: Double strokes with a shortboard

No one did it 20 years ago because no one was playing 240bpm 16th notes on the kick back then. hahaa

I kinda cheat using high head tension and loose springs but it works well. I use triggers too...

Re: One Drum Set Vs Several Drum Sets?

There is nothing wrong with 1 kit.. If I had just one it would be something middle of the road, maybe a 5 piece, but have enough stands that I could use it as a 4 as well.. Probably a 20 or a 22...
