Re: Tips on replacing Renown GTS

I updated the mounts on my Renown 10" and 12" toms to the newer DTS mounts over a year ago, and everything worked out perfectly. The lugs fit without any problems, and I even sold the old mounts and...

Re: Cutting down services?

Pro Drums in Hollywood will do it. I used to own a bass drum that I wanted cut down, and if memory serves, they quoted me something around $100-125. And that included cutting a new bearing edge,...

Re: Kick Drum physics experts in the house?

Not exactly a kick drum physics expert, but I do know that oak shells are known for their great attack, and what we perceive as attack are actually higher frequencies. So it seems that the drum...

Re: Rediculously Massive Drum Kits

From later on in that episode: "Good luck with that 29 piecer, man. Maybe someday you'll knock it up to an even 30."

Freaks and Geeks, one of my all-time favorite shows!

Re: Renown and New Classic Question

You're really going to kick yourself now, because turns out those chevrons are removable. My gigging kit is a black 57 Renown that I bought used, where the previous owner had stripped off the...

Re: Why can't I hear tones when tuning?

Try placing the snare on a carpeted surface. That helps isolate the fundamental overtones, making it easier to tell when one lug is higher or lower than another. Also, be sure there's sufficient...

Exactly! It's like you read my mind. :)

Re: Looking for similar artists (Post-punk, Jazz)

Hiromi is awesome. I've seen that video at least a dozen times. I'm even thinking about driving up to Oakland in October to see her perform at Yoshi's.

If you like that video, you'll definitely...

Re: Help me choose which thread to read about which kit to buy

For me, probably THE most important consideration are the sizes/configuration of the kit. After all, size requirements for a bop drummer will be vastly different from a thrash metal drummer, and so...

Help me choose which thread to read about which kit to buy

There are just so many threads to choose from, yet only 24 hours in a day! So do I go with "Need help picking a drumset" or "Have to choose between three kits" or "Best kit for X...

Re: Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

I hear you. Yeah, I think in this case semantics did get in the way. If "semi-pro" means not quite professional level, then "semi-intermediate" means not quite intermediate level, which is definitely...

Re: Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

Totally agreed. As much as I love the Renowns, the USA Customs are insane! If I could justify spending that much on a kit, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Same goes for the Brooklyns. AMAZING sound. In...

Re: Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

Semi-intermediate? What about the Renowns scream semi-intermediate to you? Yes, they're made in Taiwan, but they use the exact same shell design and hardware from the USA Customs, with the exception...

Re: Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

If you know you love the sound of Marquees, then you'll definitely be happy with the Renowns. They use the exact same shells, the only differences being 2.3mm triple-flange hoops on the Marquees vs....

Re: Anyone ever try to poach your seat?

I was actually on the other end of that not too long ago. Last summer, a musician friend of mine wanted to know my availability for a new tribute band he was in. They had a drummer, but they weren't...

Re: Gretsch Renown - thinking about buying

I LOVE Renowns. I have two of them in fact, one permanently set up in my rehearsal room, and one for gigging. I can't get over how good they sound, especially for the price. If that $999 set is...

Re: Drum Wrapping Info

I see what you're saying. But when it comes to drum wraps, "pearl" is actually the color of the pick guard, not the guitar. In fact, in drum wraps, that pick guard would be considered "White Marine...

Re: Weight of a drum kit

What type of shell hardware on the drums? Something with die-cast hoops and lugs will weigh a LOT more than a kit with 1.6mm hoops and cheap stamped lugs. I think the shell hardware makes a much...

Re: Drum Wrapping Info

Don't know what you mean by a solid pearl with no pattern. Pearl wraps (i.e. white marine pearl) have a pattern to them.

Regardless, I just rewrapped a floor tom to match the rest of my gigging...

Re: The worst drum /cymbal purchase you ever made

Anyone here buy those Sabian "tri hats" from the early 2000s? Required a separate stand and everything. Or the DrumFrame from around the same time that leans your whole kit back like an oversized...

Re: Kickport on 16" BD

Never tried one on anything that small, but I do have a kickport on my 20" bass drum and love it. Considering the relatively small head area of a 16" kick, perhaps it makes sense to try their FX2...

Re: 1975 - guess the drummer :)

Vinnie? The 7/8 groove and open hi hat sound (reminiscent of Joe's Garage/Keep It Greasy) makes me think so.

Re: Laptop/backing cutting out live

Just out of curiosity, have you tried using a different media player such as QuickTime or iTunes? I'm a little biased against Microsoft, so somewhere deep inside me I feel it has something to do with...
