Re: My drum teacher failed me.

Yeah, probably, but young kids can be very resistant to change, too. Also, your teacher may have been under financial pressure to make lessons entertaining, in order to retain students and keep the...

Re: My drum teacher failed me.

As a child or teen, you'd have no idea, so you can blame your parents for that, haha! Typical parents wouldn't see the value in placing their child into more than one music...

Re: My drum teacher failed me.

On the contrary. If you want a kid to get good at a young age, you deepen and broaden the education. You don't just pick one teacher and cross your fingers. You yourself only had one teacher, but...

Re: Drums as an investment?

I hope you do reap some serious rewards! The price increase that you observe in new cymbals (brand new, or used newer models) could mean that prices are being adjusted to compensate for inflation. ...

Re: Drums as an investment?

Aren't you assuming that the value of the cymbal will increase at a rate equal to or greater than the rate of inflation? If you buy a used cymbal for $100 in 2004, and you sell it in 2014 for $100,...

Re: Drums as an investment?

Maybe, but aren't the cymbal companies following the market demand for vintage-sounding, thinner cymbals? Zildjian has their Kerope line, and Paiste their Masters line. Compare the 22" Dark Masters...

Re: Drums as an investment?

http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

If you paid for a 1961 Ludwig kit the price of $300 in 1961, then in 2015 dollars that would be just over $2450. However, such a kit at Steve Maxwell's is...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Probably, you're a bit crazy. Makes sense that you're a drummer, haha! But what teacher would want to yell at their students? We're not babysitters -- if you're not going to heed the advice and...

Re: I can't believe how much I sucke when it comes to soloing.

Well, you've been working out of books that don't directly deal with soloing. The Drumset Soloist ...

Re: Best Bigband playalongs for drums?

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.

Also, there's Studio and Big Band drumming by Steve Houghton. The play alongs are just piano and bass (and they are stellar!), which might actually work in your...

Re: Auditioning for another band

Although this would seem to be the right approach, it's probably not. There are lots of songs, and the band might play some tunes a bit differently than the recording. Learn to make charts, and...

Want to be a better musician? Go get a gig that kicks your butt a little. Are you a man or a mouse? :)

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

That makes sense, and it rolls off the tongue better than "unison shuffle". But you could just as easily argue that it's not the pattern played by the right hand, but rather how the rhythm is...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Todd -- kind of surprised to hear you take such a relaxed approach to this one.

Sure, the blues shuffle police aren't going to come to your home and arrest you, but it matters to some band leaders...

Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

Short answer: both.

The longer answer is that you want to get to the point where accenting certain notes (or leaving certain note UN-accented) is a musical decision, and not something you do just...

Re: HELP: Which road do I take?

About your band's "future success"...

What's your arrangement with the original band? Are you an equal owner of mechanical and publishing rights? Is your cut of the pie smaller, because the...

Re: Need Some Advice About Studying Drumming Intensively in South America and USA

You sound like a good candidate for a cruise ship drummer! The good thing about cruise ships is that you'll really challenge your fundamental skills as you're playing gigs. You'll read charts, play...

Re: Playing for Teacher

Funny thing about mirrors and 35,000 people: neither one knows much about playing the drums, nor do they care about YOU all that much. Your teacher knows lots about drumming, and cares about you,...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

First of all, nice work! Lots of great ideas, dynamics, and overall great feel and sound.

Agree with Kamak here. When the band actually tracks together, the sound of the ensemble will...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

Are you being paid, and would you like more work? If the answer is yes to those, then abandon completely the idea of sounding like you. Do your homework in the style of the song, and play the most...

Re: Tips to help me get in a good quality functions band.

You would use a small personal mixer, and plug your IEMs into that. Into the mixer, you would connect a signal from the click, a signal from the pre-recorded track, and a signal from the band's...

Re: Upgrade From Yamaha DP... 60's Ludwig?

Have you considered piecing together a black diamond kit? Maybe you can find some orphans on eBay, and save some money.

Modern heads will fit tightly, but they should fit. Trimming away the wrap...

Re: Carmine Appice Lobbies For Led Zeppelin Drum Spot

When the surviving members of Led Zeppelin refuse to re-unite, under the banner "Led Zeppelin", they are stating, unequivocally, that their drummer, John Bonham, was so integral to the sound of their...
