Re: Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

100% yes and wish I'd done more of it years ago.

I've posted several videos playing to backing tracks, and days or weeks later I watch again and think they all suck. And even when something...

Re: Are We Just Being Silly?

Nailed it. While the concept of 'hitting drums' might conjure up to some people images of animal from the muppets and thus be considered childish, (and hilarious, which animal is :D) it's not that...

Re: Are We Just Being Silly?

How is it childish? Would you regard playing timpani, vibes, glock, marimba, and xylophone childish?

Re: How to play a rhumba?

Just to try and keep things simple for the OP for purposes of an audition, this is the way I normally play a rhumba in it's simplest form. 1 +a 2 + 3 + 4 +

Re: Drum throne height mechanics back pain

Vinnie Colaiuta back in his 1970s Frank Zappa days was a crazy low rider.
I believe he even had his throne cut down.

Re: Have You Heard of Brady Drums?

Kaide's Brady snare in his videos sounds amazing.

Lol, I'd laugh if you bought a snare from another company, it then broke and you had to pay to get it repaired.

I'm not going to say all...

Re: Weaker hand problem

Not much to add to the already great advice given. As mentioned, observe your dominant right hand and copy it, that's assuming you're confident that your right hand motions are correct and smooth....

Re: The gig that you turned down, and it's a good thing you did!

I once turned down some band called the Beatles. Good thing really, they were going nowhere.

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

Pocket-full-of-gold and cutaway 79 have summed things up nicely.
I will add this.

Thought you said you couldn't play 1/16ths around the toms?

By the way, he's also playing 1/32nd notes...

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

So are you saying that once you can play straight 1/16ths around the toms, you'll be playing as good as the kid in the videos? I'm not having a go at you, it's a serious question. I don't doubt you...

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

Nope. If I wanted to watch a gospel chops player, I'd go and watch Chris Coleman, Stanley Randolph, Eric Moore, Aaron Spears, etc. Gospel chops are not my thing though I enjoy watching it in small...

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

Yeah, the thing is with Vinnie is that he just loves to play and will and can play anything, and has played anything and everything. And I'm glad he did and still does. But if he'd decided to never...

Re: Y'all ever seen this dude?

And someone looking at Vinnie chopping away as a youngster might have said something like "Yeah, but can he be convincing playing “Mustang Sally”?"
