Water. No alcohol. Or, if you must drink alcohol, just a bit at the beginning of the gig, then water. Gatoraid may also be good, although I can't say I've tried it.

I use the just above wrinkle method with adjustments for a particular drum. But, a lot depends on what kind of music you will be playing.

Tendonitis and hearing loss. I use ear protection when I'm practicing now. I've had trouble playing out with the band with the ear protection though. Just doesn't sound right. But, as the night wears...

Yes, as already stated by others, what you learn from other instruments can help with playing drums. I play keyboards and bass. Playing these other instruments has made my drumming more "musical"....
