Re: Why are Rudiments Important
Rudiments are essentially just hand technique, and the various basic muscle movements that your hands perform while drumming. Even if you aren't playing rudiments verbatim (i.e., you could pick out...

Re: Marching Season!!
That's what I think too, it's not a very good idea at all. I'm going to talk to my band director about it. Hopefully he will make some changes and allow there to be a battery, even if it's only for...

Re: Marching Season!!
Our band starts camp next week. Unfortunately, our director decided to remove the drumline and have all the percussionists play in pit, which really makes me angry. I wanted badly to march snare...

Re: Tom-Tom Sizes
Do you like the sound you get from the 8 and 10 inch toms? If you do, then you haven't made a bad decision. Just go with whatever works for you.

Re: Kiddie drum sets?
Thanks for the responses.
The thing that makes me want to try it out is just the fact that I've never really seen it done before. And if it actually worked, it would be pretty cool.
Still, I...

Kiddie drum sets?
I had a crazy thought recently... to buy one of those little kiddie drum sets, to play small gigs, or just for fun.
I thought that one might sound almost okay with some good heads, and along with...

Slicing
Hey everyone, just wondering if you could help me with a problem I've got.
I've been practicing my rudimental snare drumming lately, and noticed that with the marching grip my right stick has a...

Re: Bass Drum Blues
You could try buying a bass drum anchor, like this (http://img3.guitarcenter.com/dbase/pics/products/tn/8/9/7/257897.jpg). No guarantee it will work, though.

Re: Angling the bass drum
I do this too, though I started for a different reason - I was uncomfortable with my snare drum being to the left of my torso, and preferred for it to be "centered". I tend to think of it as moving...

Re: ...Grrr...snare....grrr...
A moongel or dampening ring should fix your problem with your toms. Aside from that, maybe try some thicker heads than the ones you already have. You might want to try using two-ply resonant heads....

Re: How close are you to your Dream Kit?
I already have the cymbals I want - Zildjian K 20" Flat Top Ride, 1970s 18" Crash, 1950s 14" Hats.
My drums aren't even close, though. At the moment I'm playing a bottom-of-the-line Sunlite...

Re: LUDWIGS!!!!
Sounds great. Bonham used a 14x10, not a 14x12, though. If you want to use exact Bonham sizes you might want to change that.

Very good article, Nutha Jason. I used to be the drummer in my youth group's worship band, which is no longer together. If I ever happen to find myself playing in a church service in the future...

Re: Whats your Favorite fill from a song!?
I could go on and on listing all the Jimmy Chamberlin fills I like because there are so many and I can't pick any one that I like best, so I'll just say I like everything he plays!

I've heard of people putting very small (1/2 inch) holes around the edge of the resonant head to reduce the "slap back" without changing the sound.

Re: two same size floor toms?
The point of having two toms the same size is (generally) to tune them differently to get a different pitch from each one.

I know Gibraltar (and probably some other companies) sells felt strips, but it's just as easy to cut your own strips out of some felt.

Re: Left foot playing pulse
Left foot hi hat playing is definitely useful. One way I like to do this is beat-for-beat on 8ths with a ride or X-hat (a la Jimmy Chamberlin). Not only is this a cool sound, it allows for quick...
