Re: Which college will be the best choice for drummer doing rock muisc in LA?

Thank you for posting this, Steve- wonderful phrasing & important message :)

Bermuda is also very correct about this.

Re: Tight Bass Head

I meant "were you playing on your pedals when you had this experience", which it seems you were.

I was speaking to playability. A tighter spring tension will change the feel of the pedal and maybe...

Re: Tight Bass Head

Was it your pedal? How was the reso tuned? There are a lot of factors here. The taped item should just muffle that head much like the pillow was doing. You could try simply tuning up your batter...

Re: Practice pad drum set suggestions

I don't have any pictures but what I'm doing for college is as follows-

2x Vater 6" pads mounted on cymbal booms
1x Offworld Outlander pad on snare basket
1x DW Steve Smith bass drum practice...

Re: Which college will be the best choice for drummer doing rock muisc in LA?

I can't think of any professional way to play "rock music" that requires a college degree. If you want to do it for a living, you'd better be good (or practice a lot if not), find a band that's...

Re: Open handed technique

"I played it exclusively for 3 years."

I think they mean they want to play open handed right hand lead and keep the feet the same.

Re: Open handed technique

Of course it doesn't improve sound by virtue of being used, but speaking from specifically the Orbin setup, my main squeeze is that it forces one out of one's comfortable space. Instead of falling...

Re: Need a huge kick, is 60 inches enough?

Notice that it's in the "historic" category and is obviously not intended for drumset use.

Wumpus, that was pretty funny, though :)

Re: New snare build with 5 ply Keller Magnum shell

I'm guessing it's because acrylic shells/Vistalites are a continuous object rather than the separated, smaller contents of glue in a ply shell.

Re: What's your latest purchase?

That's a purty-looking snare right there.

I haven't shared any photos of my kit for a damn while, I'll have to do that soon as I've bought quite a few things!

Re: DW Collectors Snare Suggestions?

I'd recommend Padauk as well for an 'energetic' sound, I guess- plenty of crack. I have a 13x5" 1/2" thick snare from it and once I put Pearl Fat Tone hoops on it, it became an absolutely stunning...

Re: DW Collectors Snare Suggestions?

We also have forum member Carolina Drumworks, and I can recommend Daville Drumworks as I've bought a kit & snare from him previously. I'd take any of these options over a Collector's anyday, IMO.

Huh, never saw it advertised. I totally get the rubber tip comment though.

Re: Mapex Armoury

The last series didn't have spring-loaded legs IIRC, it just had the isolation mounts on everything. Wasn't really 'rims-like' either, the new ones are more that style. The IVs have the isolating...

Re: Mapex Armoury

I don't, but they're certainly more available & lower priced in the used market than the IVs, which is what I meant originally. Came off a little weird.

Re: bass drum depth

That makes literally no sense. The comparison would be larger amounts of drums, and even that's a bad analogue.

Re: Open handed technique

Yup.

Having played an "Orbinated (http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=455915&d=1376951188)" setup for a couple months now, I definitely prefer open-handed to cross-handed...

Re: Practice Pads

I've been using my Offworld Outlander for about a year now with no complaints. Affordable, great feel (for a high-tuned snare), and it has a rim. If you want a more accurate feel for low-tuned...

Re: PDP Concept Maple vs. DW Design Series

I agree wholeheartedly. I'd take the Concept Maple any day, especially with those delicious lugs and finishes.

Re: Pearl Crystal Beat Drums

Weird that they're only including 1.6mm hoops on them, but I suppose it's not a necessity since they aren't using ISS mounts.

That marketing copy on the Music Radar pictures is offensively awful.

Re: hi hat dis-assembly

Me too. I don't have cases for anything but the snare & my cymbals, so I have a very useful system for transporting in my CX7- floor tom upside down, rack tom on top with protector in between in the...

Re: Not denting heads

Also, I don't dent snare heads almost ever- even G1s- though they do get a bit of a 'crater' effect when I take them off. Rimshots constantly.

Re: Not denting heads

Yeah.

One thing that I do to get harder hits is also a marimba technique learned from my amazing teacher where one "aims" below where the bar/head is. I guess it's hard to explain, but I'll play...
