Re: Buddy Rich trap case

Stuff like that is priceless.. I think you'd have to pry it out of my hands as Charlton Heston would say! I have a Buddy Zildjan cymbal bag that was given to me many years ago.. By a close friend...

Re: Trusting others with your kit?

I have a hard rule on this.. mainly due to some bar owners that try to spring an opening act into the mix, usually at the last minute. So basically as the 'headliner' it means the sound guy is going...

Re: Contrats To Bermuda!

Excellent! Great work... we need more comedy in the world these days.

I used to rely on Weird Al tunes to keep peace in the valley - on those long car trips where the 'boys' in the back seat were...

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

It's possible the guitar or bass player are DEAF from playing too loud.. And they think their volume is quiet. A bass player friend recently quit a band because the band members ears were shot from...

Re: Help me look....cooler? more relaxed?

Check out the great Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton and his version of 'dance drumming'. I'd much rather watch him play and groove to the music using his whole body.. rather than some silly...

Re: MEMORIZING DRUM PARTS

As mentioned - a fast way to lock in charts requires 2 things:

1. write out a quick chart; 8 bar sections usually, note the intro and ending parts and any key fills and cymbal crashes. Think...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

I play the Blues Brothers version and as much as I like Otis .. The tempo seems slow and boring compared to the 'barn burner' version.. Steve Jordan is firing on all cylinders here:

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Yes.. I play that tune but twice as fast... Actually at 190 bpm. I start the little fills before the brass shots with a tom hit and snare rool -basically a six stroke roll :

Re: Good exercises for two-handed hi-hat beats?

I have to play a number of tunes like that... Some I can play with one hand on the hat but they're fast tempos and I often play 3 hour shows .. So endurance is key. When it gets to that tempo zone,...

Re: Jeff Beck w/ Vinnie (Full Crossroads 07 Set)

Jeff said Vinnie was the best drummer he'd ever played with.. but as a 'melodic instrument' the guitar leads the band. It's up to Vinnie to support the lead vocalist.. and Beck or Santana's timing...

Re: Why aren't Recording Customs popular today?

I play RC's all the time (1988).. live as well as recording. They always sound awesome, I always get compliments on their 'awesomeness'!

They still are as fine a drum as any out there.. the...

Another use for a double kick pedal!

A lot of people ask is a double kick pedal worth getting into? My answer is YES.. as even if you don't use it that much, it helps to be able to use your feet like your hands and also benefits your...

Re: Thoughs on Mapex?

Played a few kits over the years and they seemed to be very good. I picked up a Mapex Black Panther Pro maple 13" x 6 1/4" snare that sounds fantastic.. and nice maple wood finish as well. Hardware...

Re: Can music ever be financially rewarding again?

The music industry has gone through a revolution of sorts over the past 40 years or so.. first it was Disco that knocked live music off it's feet and closed a lot of union gigs and venues to the...

Re: Yamaha Recording Custom - 22" kick head/tuning advice please

I have one of those RC kicks.. and it used to sound absolutely killer. I'd originally put on a Powerstroke 3 batter and reso which gave it a superb sound. People would come up to me and tell me what...

That's funny.. I've heard that before as well, but I have a slightly different take on it. I found Dave's playing with Chic Electrik band a bit too methodical and clean.. I don't know how to describe...

Re: A question for Dave Weckl..

Yes! That's the way I learned it back in the day.. Small overlapping strokes (sound-wise not the sticks) so each buzz stroke is kind of "pp-ff-pp" moving in small ellipses off the head.. Kind of a...
