Re: Lars Ulrich

I agree, his accents and fills are weird. When covering a song they are hard for me to anticipate, but I like it. Maybe not the most technical drummer, but right for Metallica. Maybe more lazy now...

Re: As if THAT ever happens...

Just had a bar gig last Friday, they paid us an extra an $50 and told us they want us back. Was a great night overall.

Re: How tense are you when you play?

Only for the first few songs. I always insist on moderate tempo songs for the start of our setlist, after that we bounce back and fourth between slow and fast. That is usually the only warm up I get....

Re: Crap rehearsal = great gig?

Nothing like a live stage to focus and sharpen a performance. Not to say it works all the time, but personally we've never had a practice that stacked up with the best live show. Personally I don't...

This thread makes me feel better.

I always feel self conscious during sound check.

Me: thump thump thump thump ....

The other guy: thump ratta tat tat thump thump, razzle dazzle ....

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Been wanting a Paragon Steampunk ride for a while, but didn't want to spend too much for it. Well scored one this weekend in SLC for $300. It was discounted due to some scratches in the paint on the...

Re: Getting Gigs - Price Quotes

We get approached all the time for playing parties, benefits, bars, etc. In reality only 25% ever materialize. People in general are bs'ers and will promise everything.

Re: Famous drummers mixing cymbal brands

Not necessarily famous, but we opened for Tantric last month. Their drummer was rocking some Sabian B8's, paistes, etc. Not only mixed brands, but some pretty 'entry level' equipment. Same with the...

Re: Went to Memphis Drum Shop (again)...

To me Ben White has the same celebrity status as the pawn stars guys. I have watched many of his videos, maybe a 100. Would love to go there sometime.

Re: Does independence just click one day?

I envy those who can. For me, the hardest click was when I first started playing the drumset, maybe around 8th or 9th grade and learning a basic rock beat. It was hard and took me about 2 - 3 weeks...

Re: How do you count while playing drums?

Might be weird, but I count primarily with my right hand. As a result I don't swing well, and when I do its on the bass drum. I also have some major independence issues. When counting between breaks...

Re: Tricks for faster set up

I use a 3 piece PDP rack with a 6 piece kit (3 up 1 down), memory locked for major pieces. The cymbal arms and tom mounts are easily adjustable. The only seperate stands or pieces are the snare &...

Re: Told to hit harder

This was for a live show, we were opening for Tantric, however it was a benefit concert, there were about 150 in attendance. The 'sound guys' are mutual friends and donated their time, though the...

Re: Told to hit harder

Thanks for the input. On stick size, for most of our stuff I use Zilijian Super 7As, a slightly longer version of a standard 7A. I also have some Ahead Mudvayne Spug 7A's that I pull out for heavier...

Re: Told to hit harder

This is pretty typical of my "intensity":

On stick stick size I typically play with Super 7A's, I also use...

Re: Told to hit harder

Everything was miced up. Each tom, bass, snare plus overheads. Guitars shouldn't have been an issue since the cab were forward of the set and at a lower level. The drums were on a one foot riser.

Told to hit harder

So, we did a show last night and some of our friends did the sound, one of which is a drummer and the other is a guitarist in a cover band. Well after our set the guitarist told me I need to hit...

Re: The worst gig of my life

I agree, some of the responses are rather harsh. The reality, it is a personal choice and purely opinion. There is no definitive 'right way' and those will vary wildly on venues and events.

Re: The worst gig of my life

We've been lucky. I've only had to use a "shared" or "backlined" kit 5 or 6 times over the last 3 years but I won't do it again unless I get to see and hear the kit in advance. Last fall was the last...

Re: How Does Your Band Set Up on Stage?

We are a 4 piece, so I am usually at the back, center, or in the corner. The Bass, lead, and Rhythm all sing and are in the front. I don't mind :)

Re: What's on your bass drum reso head?

Did this one up a few years ago. Made from paper printed on a color laser printer. Used the original Photoshop layers and printed them using a program called poster razor. They are glued on the head...

Re: Double Bass Drum Futility

Debated on contributing to this thread.

I feel the op's pain, I too have struggled with double bass since 2000 or so when I picked up my first double pedal. After having already played off an on...
