Re: Help with figuring out the Mapex Line

Totally forgot about that. The Dillinger in particular, I remember being impressed by in some soundfiles.

Re: THE CLASSIFIEDS - For Sale / Wanted

Selling my 13x5" stave snare for $240, free shipping, or make an offer. Almost every cover I've done on my channel has this snare in it. Fantastic for a powerful, biting, nimble snare.

Re: Help with figuring out the Mapex Line

I think it's mainly pricing. A kit like the Saturns in 10-12-14-20 for $12-1400? Sold.

Mapex also used to have some "Meridian Black" special edition kits with maple/birch hybrid shells, so I'm...

Re: Open handed newbie here

Yup, it's a Gibraltar no-leg stand with a clamp I MacGyver'd out of a Tama MCA63EN, a DW cowbell hoop clamp, and a long knurled rod from a cheap multipercussion clamp. There are... better solutions,...

Re: Open handed newbie here

Not really anything to contribute, that's the same journey I went through when I started on an "Orbinated" setup (open-handed and mostly symmetrical). I found that that vs. your typical setup was...

Re: Favourite hoops and why?

I like the sound of S-Hoops on everything I've tried them on, but there are just too many other concerns with them for me to really love them any more. Obviously mic clips, but also, I feel like they...

Re: 14x7 cast steel

Very responsible crack. Doesn't strike me like the others, though maybe if I were playing with the RHCP it'd be a different story.

Re: 20x16 triggered Kick drum

Well, if you're triggering, you probably want the sound of the trigger and not the drum. So muffling it reduces that sound, as well as making it less noticeable if it's tuned poorly.

I do find...

Re: Dual Purpose Tom/Snare??

It's just subject to the same issues you get with an extremely low-tuned "snom" you have to sacrifice either some of the snare sound or some of the tom sound to get a good one of either.

I would...

Re: Best drums under $1500?

Buy used, definitely.

ORRRR....

Mapex Saturn. That's the only one I'd really recommend in this range, and despite their company practice re: patenting a widely-used bearing edge for lame...

Re: Black beauty snare wires snapped.

I had this issue with my Sabian snare wires. I keep all of my sets at about the same tension (including two pairs of Puresounds and one crappy stock Taye set) and yet the Sabians had an edge wire...

Re: Favorite throw off and why?

The MAG is a good throw. A bit heavy though.

For my money, my favorite balance of weight, feel, look, and mechanism is the Tama Linear Drive strainer. I want one on all of my drums.

I find...

Re: Mapex bp nomad or dw collectors nob

I doubt you'll find much issue with having a 13 for rock. Chris Adler uses a 12" with Lamb of God.

Re: Favorite floor tom size and why?

15s, duh.

I have a 15x14 but after using it for a while, it seems like a shallower one (i.e. 15x12") would have been more my liking. Gotta remember that on the next kit.

Re: Mapex bp nomad or dw collectors nob

I really enjoyed my 13s. They're more fun to play than my 14s, IMO.

Dre's Nomad sounds unbelievable, I would happily play that over any DW snare.

However there are definitely a lot of options...

Re: Larnell Lewis' low snare/floor tom sound...

To echo my contribution in that thread, I've had good results for this sound so far with the Heavyweight and G2 heads. Not as much with any single-ply tops and the Black Chrome was just a bit too...

Re: 12x8 or 13x9 for single rack tom??

Yuuup. Commit to the bit.

If you use a 4-piece kit out of those parts, a 13-15 spread is not bad at all. I use a 12-15 pair but I didn't go for a plus-size kit (10-12-15" toms) and I easily could...

Re: Steel Snares???

Yeah, I would first try muffling and different heads. What heads are you using?

Obviously for your "clean crack" you'll want a higher-tuned batter head. If the Armory snares come with typical...

Re: Guitar Center's used inventory

I think the shipping differs between stores/items. If you enter the checkout process you can see how much it'll be for each item. I think I paid about $30 combined tax and shipping on a $160 cymbal...

Re: Incorrect terms and Discrimination

It is pretty funny. "No drum kits allowed"? I mean, marching cymbals aren't part of a "drum kit". Nothing in a marching percussion line is part of a drum kit. Sounds like I've gotta call my high...

Re: Drum spacing issues.

A "95-100 angle" would mean that you're actually sitting a little higher than a 90 angle. Is that correct? Anyways, just adjust your throne until you find a comfortable position. That overrides the...

Re: Pork Pie Big Black Snare question

G2s are pretty standard heads, lots of folks use em. It's two ply so it should have more "focus" than the likely 1-ply stock head on there now. And the Hazy 300 is the standard Evans snare side as...

Re: Video Camera Advice

I've heard good things about the Zoom H4n (http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Handy-Portable-Digital-Recorder/dp/B001QWBM62). Personally I would get an audio-only device like that and do the video separately...
