Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

Five, if memory serves.

There was an ancient Gretsch kit that I totally destroyed because I was a knowitall teenager. Round-badge, no idea what year. Punk music killed it. Cracked two shells in...

Just picked up one of these (http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/product/hardware_data.php?year=2015&area=2&id=149):

Re: Eek - where did it all go right?

What he said, Ms Madge. Sparkle like a Twilight vampire, smile like a person who's up to no good, and you'll be A-okay.

But you know that already. You don't need me to tell you. ;-)

For a...

Re: Eek - where did it all go right?

Sounds like a gig, no matter what else is going on. :-)

You'll have fun, that's for sure. And if you DO get on telly, you can always bug Andy for endorsement "gimmes".

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

There's a difference between something that's small and tasteful and something that screams "PRODUCTNAME!"

It's the difference between a small brass plaque which has engraved upon it, "R P Davis,...

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

Yeah, and that irritates me, too. ;-)

You're absolutely right. Each instrument has its own visual characteristics which can be identified by the observant gear nerd.

I wonder why it's...

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

Agreed.

Drummers are really the only ones on stage with massive logos all over our gear. If you get close enough to the sax player to see what make of horn he's playing, you'd better get an...

Re: Blues jam session ... play simple - receive big applause

Pretty simple, really:

Re: When disaster strikes: Your opinion

There's nothing in my instrument collection that can't be replaced. I wouldn't even stop to think about that. Just the humans, the hounds, and the crucial documents. Everything else can go hang.

Re: Crap rehearsal = great gig?

Yep. Crap dress = great opening night. I learned that in theatre.

I think it has something to do with conquering nerves, as well as overcoming adversity. The nerves come from "What if X, Y, Z,...

Re: New Drums

That's fair.

Personally, I don't see/hear an appreciable gap between a high-quality APAC kit and "American" stuff short of the tippity-top of custom, handmade lines.

For example, I defy...

Re: New Drums

Really? How about because of statements like this:

It's widely known that there's little sonic difference between Concept Maple and the lower-tier DW offerings. It's widely known that PDP...

Re: New Drums

It's a common-enough starting point for many American drummers, even though there's no good reason for it.

Re: Should I Do It?

+1,000 to DON'T DO IT. You're a student in the middle of exams, fer crissake. You don't get a do-over if you f*ck that up because some douchecannon pressured you into a gig.

Bag it.

Re: New Drums

Damn, GDM. That right there is some potent philosophy. We've all heard the "above a certain price point, there's not a lot of difference in sound" rationale, but you put into words that intangible -...

Re: Bad gig, good learning experience.

Which mansion?

Sorry your gig went south. :-( Feces occurs, lesson(s) learned, and I'm out of platitudes. You're a solid, sensitive player, and will assimilate those lessons.

Rise above!

Re: What's your latest purchase?

I have this drum with die-cast rims. Got it from www.drumfactorydirect.com a while back. I replaced nothing except the batter head when it got knackered.

Love love LOOOOVE it. I hope you do too....

Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

It's mystifying. I understand the impulse - I suffer from it to a limited extent myself - but I don't buy into it.

Here, let me break your OCD brains:

Kit (bass/toms): Mapex Meridian Maple...

Re: Let down by a drummer with chops but no ability

This is how I know I don't suck. I can't play any of the hot shit. But I receive regular invitations to play with people who enjoy playing with me.

That's the win.

Re: Your approach to supporting a solo.

I dig you, and agree, because I think we're talking about the same thing. We're using two different routes to get to the same destination.

The soloist should be soloing for the song. Her solo...

Re: Your approach to supporting a solo.

Definitely A. The time to be interesting is not during another's solo. That's the time for THEM to be interesting. If the soloist decides she's going to trade fours, or accents, or otherwise...

Re: My very first open mic

Jeez. No wonder the drummers who came to the open mic I ran always enjoyed it. I put out a nice kit, properly tuned, with quality cymbals.

I had no idea that was an anomaly.

Re: Stock snares

Update: I broke the cherry on my new Mapex Meridian Maple kit last night on a gig. I am very much surprised at how the stock snare worked. It sounded very good to my ear and the ears of the band I...
