Re: Cajon recommendation

I have a Kopf (https://www.kopfpercussion.com/) and it sounds fantastic and is a beautifully made instrument.
I recently got a PR video link from them (bought my cajon a couple years ago).
It's a...

I watched Rena Beaves a couple nights ago...

...with the Carlos Montoya band and what a great, solid, player. The band was fantastic. The venue was small and intimate, and the sound system was good. Rena's playing was incredibly tasteful, and...

Re: Rimshots on die cast hoops

I like it! ;)
So do hoops play as big a roll in the sound of a drum as the shell? It definitely affects the sound more than most people realize.

Re: Rimshots on die cast hoops

All the snares I own, up until recently, are die-cast (top side at least) and then I bought a Tama HH Copper snare with custom machined triple flange 2.3 brass hoops. Previous snares... 8" birch...

Re: Struggling with Renowns

I suspect die cast hoops will accentuate any defects in either the hoop or the drum bearing edge. As previously mentioned, die cast won't flex as much as triple flange, but if the drum bearing edge...

Re: Picked up a Mapex V series Jazz Kit...

What a score! Nice you have a dad that checks out the flea markets. I have been to one of those in decades.

Re: Die cast (again?)

Top die cast and bottom triple flange is what Tama did on the SC model and it sounds great. I'm not sure how much difference a die cast would make on the bottom. I also have a Tama Dynamic Bronze...

Re: Finally! My First Final Phil Collins tribute kit

Very cool! I used to own a Ludwig melodic tom kit. It sounded great.

Re: Calling All Mapex Saturn Experts

The paint job looks great, but more importantly... how do they sound together. ;)

Re: New Tama Star finish.

You're right... my bad... Walnut. IMHO the snare can stand apart cosmetically (especially if it's metal) as long as it fits the kit sound wise. I think the Tama Hand hammered copper snare would...

Re: New Tama Star finish.

So what snare will you use? The matching Maple or that awesome Star Reserve Copper? I think the copper would look great with that kit. ;)

Re: New Tama Star finish.

I think it's basically a 2 ply cosmetic finish over maple, and I love what I've seen of it, as done by Tama. Japanese sen varies greatly, as can be seen here...

Re: All copper shell snare

I finally ordered one (not in stock, but expected soon). I know that old song and dance, but I got a discount and I'm not in a hurry. I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations. It seems to be a...

Re: Ludwig Fab 4 Classic Maple - questions?

For cymbals, in my mind, there is a slight trade-off for the consistency. It used to be great to find a "gem", and it really was one of a kind. I think a lot of cymbal makers realize that and...

Re: Arcanum Drums

I think I know what you are saying, but even the cymbal tech is over rated as far as "sound" is concerned. In the "old" days, they didn't worry about patina, how the lathing looked, how the hand...

Re: Arcanum Drums

I actually like and appreciate that, and as an engineer, it intrigues me. Nothing really looks "wrong" about them. It's just a different aesthetic. But my bottom line is: Do they sound good? ;)
