There are loads of head combinations but I find the old classic Remo Abadassor or Ambassador Vinatge (depending on the drum) work for me ... as for tuning, check out Bob Gatzen's videos on YouTube,...

Try to familiarise yourself with the original recordings & get a general feel for the tunes (groove etc) and think of each song in sections - add a tambourine...

Nice one Jay! Yeh - Fred Below starting as a jazzer makes perfect sense. He really knew how to swing and to play with real authority at low volumes.

Try the Bob Gatzen videos on YouTube - guaranteed to make your snare sing, although you may need to experiement a little with the notes & intervals between the heads he suggests from drum to drum...
