Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

I found this funnier than I should.

My main gripe at the mo is gospel chops for me aka dynamics are for pussies drumming

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

When the weather is bad it has happened!

I'm exactly the same, goes everywhere with me now. I only got mine for venues with noise limiters but I played a huge corporate gig to about 2000 with...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I've thought the same and maybe a downbeat............but here's where the shrinking bit comes in.

The Pearl Midtown has a bag set. One of the bags is designed to fit 10x7/13x12 and a snare. I've...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I'd love a DW Frequent Flyer. It's where my gigging has evolved to in terms of going small.

I love my midtown, it's the best gigging kit I've ever had. Even though to 99% of the audience a drum is...

Re: Best budget recording drums

Man that's an extremely tight budget in the UK for brand new. Nice to see those 9000 per year tuition fees going towards the students :)

Here goes:

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Sounds like you're just getting annoyed with other drummers, it happens doing gigs with multiple bands. We all do things differently. A good drummer just gets on with it on a backline kit, as long as...

Re: Oiling/Waxing a drum

The drum is drying out. I was told it would happen when I made it (Tiki Snare Building Course). We used Tung oil when building it and was advised to use it in the future.

We had a problem with our...

Re: Oiling/Waxing a drum

Cheers guys.

Now to find an English version of home depot :)

The Johnson's fine wood paste looks like a winner.

Outside, it's a bit of a random question I know.

Oiling/Waxing a drum

My steambent is due its annual service but I've got to oil the shell again for the first time since it was built.

Tung oil is easy to get hold of so it will need a couple of coats over a couple of...

Re: A re-statement of the obvious

This place is great, as I always say it gets me through some long ass days in the office.

Only time it gets vaguely feisty is when taste in music/covers or originals debates kick off or something...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

$70 a custom hoop isn't bad at all. I wouldn't transport that without cases, looks too nice to risk damaging it.

I'm guessing you're gonna play it 24/13/16 with the rack on a snare stand so the...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

Vintage style bass drum hoops with the aged WMP inlay would look amazing. The WMP strips are the easy bit. The vintage hoops in good condition will be slightly trickier.

All good fun, I'll...

Re: Vintage Pearl Drums!

All you need to do is put some proper bass drum hoops on that. Looks like it's been cared for all it's life.

How are the tom holders on the older Pearl stuff. I still have flashbacks to the old...

Re: Very high pitch snare sound

Anything metal and 5" deep or shallower.

Tune the heads tight and away you go.

Re: Anyone just play drums for themselves only?

Totally agree! There's some cool stuff on youtube that would have cost a fortune to acquire 15 years ago.

If you're earning a living from drumming and do some vids on the side, that's cool. Drumeo...

Re: Anyone just play drums for themselves only?

Beautifully put, I'm the same with the gym, a lot of the time people don't get it.

I look at both as a learning curve and a journey which is more rewarding/frustrating than any audience. Teaches...

Re: Anyone just play drums for themselves only?

I think you have to, to stay sane! Just do it in the right context :)

When I'm on the regular gig, I switch off and go into autopilot. I have to sing a lot as well. I also use a travel kit for...

Re: quality of drum sounds to the rest of the band is not important

I think the guys who the OP plays with want to have their cake and eat it. You can either have taped up tickled drums that sound crap or drums played with dynamics that sound good.

To play just...

Re: Concert style tom's

+1, it's an acquired taste but the amount of songs recorded with them is mind blowing.

I guess Hal Blaine is the pioneer with concert toms when he converted a pair of timbales and used them...

Re: time keeping/ guitarists

Spot on, and invest in some decent pedals, the less is more approach soundscape-wise really works for stripped back acoustic songs. The lightweight Fender stuff is great and the new player series...

Re: Space Aliens at the local bar

I had a bar job in my teens and used to loathe karaoke night with a passion.

The same people singing the same awful songs awfully every week absolutely dripping in reverb to try and mask the fact...

Re: time keeping/ guitarists

I've heard worse recordings don't beat yourself up! Get yourself louder in the mix live and get a bass part down so there's a solid rhythmic foundation you can hear and feel!

Spotted the problem...
