Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Not entirely drum related, but a local 50’s band plays to backing tracks - you can hear saxes and a horn section playing, even though the band is just guitars, keyboard, drums. If you’re going to...

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Really tall bass drums, with the rack tom mounted way off the the left.

I like the rack tom to be almost above the bass pedal, certainly near the centre of the drum, not away to the left where my...

Re: What makes....

A big factor is the instrumentation. Swing implies a big band of saxes, brass and rhythm, maybe a clarinet or singer.

Rock implies guitar, bass, drums + vocal.

A string quartet could play an...

Re: quieten the resonant snare drumhead

You could roll up a small towel and carefully place it under the drum, avoiding the wires.

Re: I suck at power ballads.

Loving this old thread. I filled in for a band a few weeks ago and had to play ‘You make me feel like a natural woman’ fkrthe first time. That was an exercise in making a very slow 3/4 sound good...

Re: Looking for Jazz Drum Set

For my school stage band we bought a Stage Custom in the 20, 10,12,14 configuration. The 20” bass suits shorter/younger students but still sounds big enough for the big band. We changed the heads to...

Re: About to buy a Gretsch Catalina Club kit...

Thanks for posting - its nice to hear an update and discover what you ended up doing. The school where I teach has five Stage Custom kits, different eras, and they all sound good, especially with...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Duct Tape is active on Aussie Facebook, and it looks like he’s heading off on an overseas band tour today, although they had a glitch/delay with their flight...

Re: Analogue to digital - the journey begins.

The main cover band I’m in (11 piece with horns) went digital a couple of years ago. Took a while to tweak everything, but now its graat - switch it on and we all have the same foldback mix as last...

Re: I have a really stupid question (cymbal topper)

I’ve recently replaced my 20 year old Sonor clamps with the Tama cymbal toppers for my gigging kits. I like a top felt and have the clamp just holding it in place. I don’t like cymbals bouncing...

Re: About to buy a Gretsch Catalina Club kit...

I have owned one for a year. Its the previous model with the square fittings, walnut gloss finish. I’ve played maybe 30 jazz, blues and cover band gigs on it in that time. I find the bass drum a bit...

Re: Gigging Mishaps

I went to a country town gig without cymbals.
I went to a winery gig without a bass drum.
And a local gig without floor tom legs.

Re: Brady or Noonan?

A number of Australian builders have more or less taken over where Chris Brady left off. They all make their own shells from Aussie hardwoods. Jarrah is popular for staves because it was used for...

Re: Band names?

There was a band in my town called Jehovah’s Waitresses.
They did a show with another local band called Satan’s Cheerleaders.

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

I heard a band playing Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ on Friday.
Since the original song has no drums at all, the version I heard with live drums worked well. I wouldn’t say the original part...

Re: Not having fun playing

Find some songs with beats you can play, put headphones on and play along. The recording sounds so much better than just practicing drums on their own, and keeps the momentum going.

There are also...

Re: Is this crazy?

I tweak my tom and floortom for most venues - one small pub in particular the toms sound dead, so I tune them up a bit until they ‘speak’. In other locations they sound better lower and deeper.

Re: Creative/minimalist kick drum muffling ideas?

I have a folded towel, maybe 8 layers thick, 6 inches wide, leaning more on the batter side.
It’s held in place by two pieces of elastic which stretch between the bottom lugs. Never moves during...

Re: Bass drum mic picking up Toms

My rack tom and floor tom both resonate for a bit every time I play the bass drum. Acoustically, in the room, with no mics or amplification. No-one usually notices during gigs.

The ringing comes...

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

There are some 90’s songs where the original has two drummers, or a basic groove plus tom fills at the same time. Hard to decide what to play live.

e.g Let’s Stick Together, Real Wild Child, Boys...

Re: Rules in Music

Just like 'poetic license', there are no hard and fast rules, but it pays to know the norms or traditional rules for your genre, so that when you choose to break those rules you're aware of what...
