Re: Practicing on a Pillow

Yep !

I agree with you.

Practicing on a pillow is more work for your arms, wrists and fingers. So you will get tired sooner. Getting a good workout is one of the reasons for doing it.

Re: More Creative on a Larger Kit

This thread brings up a good point.

When I practice on my pillow, maybe I should use two pillows so I can learn to be more creative.

Re: More Creative on a Smaller Kit

After reading this I'm thinking, from an audience and other band members perspective, the extra voices (larger kit) would be better.
How many listeners would think, "Gee this drummer is really...

Re: Practicing on a Pillow

I practiced with a pillow 50 years ago. It was used to develop proper arm, wrist and finger technique. It helped teach me how to lift the stick off the drum head after the hit.
And it was only...

Re: Annoying Sounds

Right on Uncle Larry.

The speech on "Drumming is a journey not a destination" goes here.

All musicians constantly live with the thought of the things they can't play. No matter how good a...

Re: Tell me if this is a stupid idea

Rubber bands to keep a drum stick in your hands? Come on Larry. Your idea might work for some people, but it won’t work for you !

You knew when you first posted this idea that you would never...

Re: Not doing a gig because of the venue

Yeah Larry, they pay in advance probably because everyone including the management gets so wasted they can't count out the money at the end of the gig.

(Or maybe they get robbed so often there is...

Re: Not doing a gig because of the venue

Well at some point you do have to worry about your safety. And the safety of your drum set.

If I heard it was a really bad place, I would go to the venue to check it out.

Then you will know...

Re: Tell me if this is a stupid idea

Stick wax works great, except you can't move the stick around in your hand very well. And it means your hand will be sticky after you play.

For me, coated sticks work the best. I can easily move...

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Have any of you used one of these? Looks like a good idea.

I think I would try it with no top felt.

Re: Looking for help choosing a pro level drum kit

Yes seriously !

Think hard about where you will keep your drums when you can't baby sit them.

Think lost / stolen / trashed.

Re: Tell me if this is a stupid idea

It's a stupid idea.

An old drummer friend of mine has lost his grip. He uses these.

I tried them. They don't work for me because I...

Re: Liveliness in playing

Larry is correct.

Watch this video. It is Steve Gadd playing. A great drummer. Listen to exactly what he played. Count the numbers of fills and cymbal crashes.
Not much punch and dynamics...

Re: Liveliness in playing

I agree with Louis and Larry.

The only thing that might add a little more dynamics is when you do a fill, hit the first beat of the fill a little louder. Although you did do that a couple of...

Re: The side snare

Thanks for that brady, very tasteful piece.

However, it sounds to me like Steve switched from cross sticking to hitting the snare drum with the stick. Not switching snare drums. It could have...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

Went to the WalMart today. Found this:

Will be used for jokes that the bass player tells every week; and for my solos.

Re: Wine Barrel Bass Drum

TPdrums:

Interesting information. Thanks.
I like the tone. Yes, it may project as you say.

What kind of vent does it have. Any holes in the shell?

Re: Wine Barrel Bass Drum

It looks beautiful !
It might have a nice sound, but I think it is too much air to move around and it would not project very good.
