Re: Unique Sounds from a Standard Kit

Look at some of Eric Harland's ideas too. Goat hooves are a god send for this type of stuff in my opinion. Also, I like choking the cymbal with your cymbal hit...press down hard into the cymbal...

Re: Playing using your lower back

I don't actively "play" with my lower back, but I do use it the whole time I'm drumming. I realized this after a recent back injury. When you sit down at the kit and play for any amount of time,...

Re: It's almost like the White Stripes!

WANT to try this. How is it? Can you give me any insight into the sound and how you both structure things?

Re: How Embarassing/What to do when...

This is mostly what I've been doing. It HAS helped quite a bit. I just want to be one of those "solid as a rock" drummers. I'm never going to be able to compete with a lot of drummers on chops,...

Re: How Embarassing/What to do when...

Indeed. My guitar plucking comrade recommended this exercise to me. But my little cheapo metronome doesn't facilitate rests.

Re: How Embarassing/What to do when...

Thanks for all the replies! I like the Max Roach advice the best so far though!

I am planning on sticking with the metronome during practice for awhile. I don't think I want to use it playing...

How Embarassing/What to do when...

You can't keep time. I know my time isn't perfect. In fact...sometimes it sucks. A year and a half or so ago I got to hear some playback of some lives shows I had played. And I rushed EVERYTHING...

Re: Drumming with no hi hats

I can see what people are saying...and they may not be "wrong," but don't be afraid to be unconventional. If you're only skipping out on the hi-hats because of the cost or inconvenience, it might be...

Re: Developing the hi hat

This. This is so key. You find your weaknesses pretty quick with this setup. The better you can identify problem areas in your playing, the better you can work through them.

Re: Dear Heavens, WHAT Have I Gotten Myself Into?

Strong work my friend. That shows some true grit and adaptability as a drummer.

Re: Stanton Moore : The Spirit of New Orleans

Can it? I'm pretty interested if it could be had for just a little bit less...otherwise I'll just settle for a George Way (life is tough).

Re: Stanton Moore : The Spirit of New Orleans

So I resurrected this thread to ask...is it worth it?

I'm considering buying this snare. Unfortunately I won't get an opportunity to play it beforehand, but it sounds great from the recordings I...

Re: What if....?

That would be absolutely AWESOME!!!! I would really love to see how that played out.

I got in an argument with these guys the other night after a show. They seemed to think I was limited by my...

Re: What Was Your Tipping Point for Dramatic Improvement?

1. Listening to Steve Jordan intently.
2. Messing around with open-handed playing.
3. Focusing on relaxing while drumming. To the point of nearly dropping your sticks; playing super loose.
4....

Re: how to simply decrease ugly over tones

Wow. I sense a little elitism here. I don't muffle my drums at all anymore, but back in the day I did just this, albeit with a paper towel. I don't see how this is really any different than...

Re: Expect band mates to help unload kit

I definitely expect help from my bandmates. I don't ask civilians to help out so I feel like the people moving my drums have a good concept of the expense and fragility of high end instruments.

Re: Don`t touch my drums!

I'm too damn nice. Thing is...I absolutely HATE when people sit down and start playing my kit without asking. I subscribe to the theory that I'll probably hit them harder than anyone else, but...

Re: Words for describing drum sounds?

Are there musicians you can hang out with that could explain this in person? To me the most important characteristics are bright vs. warm/dark.

Bright-...

Re: Zero Confidence now...

I would definitely say work your pad. You'll probably be surprised how quickly your chops come back if you really make a point of putting in some serious time on your practice facilitating stick...

Re: Best ways to practice.

I had sort of an epiphany the other day (actually provided by one of my friends). Don't practice an exercise as just an exercise. If you look at it as something separate ("this is not real...

Oh man...you'll be giddy for days when it finally comes in. Great finish choice too...looks classy.
