Re: John Von Ohlen: Some Best Moments in Drumming Have Been the Simplest

I had when I was very young (passed on to me by brother) Gene Krupa's instructional book for beginners and that is the way he played and recommended the snare be played. It was a really old book and...

Re: Snare sound with Hot Rods?

I use the Hot Rods and have also used the Tala Wands; the a fore mentioned Slats are a variation on the same idea. The Slats seem like a good idea and received a VG review in Modern Drummer. Oddly I...

Re: Apollo 100 -The Rare & Great "Drum" Version of the song "Popcorn" You've Probably Never Heard!

The original was a big hit in Montreal when I was in my late teens.
This is certainly a different take on it; less irritating. Nice find.

Re: Here are Benny Grebb & Bernad Purdie lessons On Drumeo

In Modern Drummer he simply states that he addresses that issue in the book.

Re: Here are Benny Grebb & Bernad Purdie lessons On Drumeo

Ha Ha; The same, thing happened to me, I was concentrating so much on the breathing I ended up getting tenser. Practice makes perfect and when I was able to get it to happen in the flow I certainly...

Re: Here are Benny Grebb & Bernad Purdie lessons On Drumeo

True; his message seems be all about relaxing and staying in the pocket.
No running shoes! Not sure that would have been my one piece of advice.
LOL
You have to love the guy.

Here are Benny Grebb & Bernad Purdie lessons On Drumeo

Drumeo has great guest drummers conducting on line lessons-Here are 2 you I know you will enjoy.

Benny Grebb is a very interesting communicator; the lesson is broken down in to 4 parts, all...

Re: Buddy Rich: Two Kinds of Technique I Admired

Buddy could surprise you; I would not have expected him to say that about with no technique. Jim Chapin also said the same thing, that some of the best drummers he had heard had no technique. It may...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

In a perfect world one would master Traditional, Matched and French and be able to transition from one to the other as required.

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

I stand corrected; the debate continues. Good thing I didn't mention using the middle finger as the fulcrum rather than the index.

(If you are interested here is an article from a while back)

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Thanks; he seems to be doing a sort of Gene Krupa thing.

Here is opinion in the 70's

Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

I don't think until I stumbled on this video had I ever seen him do so; he was such a proponent of the traditional. I don't think it really matters all that much these days and perhaps for this tune...

Re: Only Weird Al Could Pull This Off-Love It

I have to admit that I was surprised by the swearing as I have always seen Al as a fairly clean cut sort of cat. I found this mini review interesting as the poster takes a darker view in general. You...

Re: Serious drummer? (I think not ;)

Drums sound great. Really very good testament to the quality, to sound so clear through what I assume is the camera mic.
Of course your playing helps too.

Re: Even Jo Jo Drops A Stick Now & Then-Nerve Live

It is on the first track but that was not the point, as mentioned in another reply; it was just a way for me to introduce the video; it doesn't matter about the stick thing it is just a good...

Re: Even Jo Jo Drops A Stick Now & Then-Nerve Live

Cheers;

In the latest Modern Drummer it shows his kit without the traditional tom position so I am assuming it was new. In his DVD Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer he plays a traditional set...

Even Jo Jo Drops A Stick Now & Then-Nerve Live

I like the new set up which is simply moving the soft tom over beside the floor; It's a simple thing but you certainly will approach fills differently.
This seems to...

Re: Why the "hate" for nylon tips??

I use nylon & wood, different sizes and brands.
Regal Tip make a series of sticks that use a specially designed nylon tip that almost simulates the sound of wood.
