Re: Mike Mangini

Did he say people of all other cultures or certain cultures don't understand odd-times? You seem to imply the latter which is not necessarily inconsistent with having a world view.

His comments...

Re: Great hip hop drummers?

Not sure if he qualifies as a drummer (he may be thought of as a drum programmer), but J Dilla put out some truly amazing stuff during his unfortunately short life.

Re: Nick Menza

That could be true, but how has he supported himself since then? Is he getting significant royalties from the old albums; was he credited as a songwriter even?

At some point, financial necessity...

Re: Nick Menza

I'm a huge Menza fan too but let's be honest, his career started and ended with Megadeth and essentially defines his career as a working professional. What else can he be doing or talking about that...

Re: Ginger Baker

No updates to this thread in quite some time. Interesting.

Anyone purchase his latest album, 'Why?' It's tough to listen to it without being keenly aware of his physical ailments; the tempo seems...

Re: Neil Peart

Agreed that Peart is an amazing and hugely influential rock drummer, and a phenomenal drummer for Rush. I'm a huge Rush fan and have seen them in concert many times.

Popularity, originality, and...

Re: Importance of a good drum throne?

hmm. To play's devil advocate, in my experience, having a cheap, no-frills throne actually forces you to play with good balance and posture. Plush seats with ergodynamic countours are much more...

Re: Hannah Ford and Prince

Interesting this thread just came back to life, and no one mentioned her national performance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend.

Anyone see her? I thought she played well and played with...

Re: A REVELATION.

Well, to paraphrase Gruber, any technique that leads to pain/injury is not an advisable one to continue. He'd be the first to say that persisting with a technique which is causing long-term health...

Re: Ginger Baker Reacts to Passing of Jack Bruce

I thought Ginger's comments, all things considered, were quite respectful and thoughtful. Understandably, his reputation and past relationship with Jack may influence how we interpret what Ginger...

Re: Beginner (Fun) songs?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but while I would agree that replicating the sequence of notes played by Phil Rudd is not technically demanding, he has a groove and swagger all his own which is...

Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

Brilliant musician. His stuff with 70s Genesis ranks among the best prog rock ever created.

Listen to Seconds Out and prepare to be blow away. The double drumming with Chester Thompson on...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

I remember being a bored and mediocre university student who did not care about school at all. I then took an English course with a university professor who literally changed my worldview. He taught...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

I agree - plenty of ways to expose a beginner to the drumset without overwhelming them. I remember my early lessons playing Syncopation on snare with bass drum and hi-hat accompanying. I don't know...

Re: Hey Lefty Drummers

Yeah, that's the problem. I can play with the hi-hat on the left, and ride with either my left or right hand in many instances, but the big issue is what my feet are playing on and the tom set-up....

Hey Lefty Drummers

Realizing that this squarely falls within the context of "first world" problems, any of you get bummed out being a lefty drummer, particularly when using rehearsal space or playing on open mics?...

Playing with hiccups

Hi all,

Kind of a silly question, but any of you ever had to contend with a major bout of hiccups while gigging?

We've all had to deal with illness, anxiety, or tightness, while playing live....

Re: Upcoming Concerts You Will Be Attending

I was supposed to go to the Bozzio concert this Friday in Toronto, but a work commitment is forcing me to bail. :(

Really wanted to see that crazy kit in action.

Re: Worst song ever

What about "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt? Just a way overly sentimental song with a horrible chorus.

Re: Worst song ever

It's not so much the song I can't stand, it's that video. Seeing those little poseurs running around with their staged hijinks makes me want to take a baseball bat to the set and chase them around...
