Re: Ideal length for a drum solo?

Viperpercussionist, I'd say that's the ideal kind of drum solo for that kind of setting. Not too long, not boring, there was a build and a climax, and you didnt go overboard with anything. For the...

Re: What First Inspired You

I was 12 and Nirvana was the first band I ever air drummed to, which is where my interest in drumming began. Didn't start drumming till I was 18 and I play nothing like that now (and don't really...

Re: my paradiddles do not sound like singles. help.

I'm with the "Why make paradiddles sound like singles?" crowd. It definitely does take alot of control to be able to do it, but if you want the sound of singles, why not play singles? Also, what I...

Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

My greatest weakness in drumming is getting caught up in thinking that I suck, that I'm a horrible drummer. I feel my other weaknesses are nothing a little practice and more lessons won't fix.

Re: Derrick Pope: Moeller - One Handed Roll - Heel Toe - DrumSet

I'm also very thankful for these videos and I give both Derrick and Tim Waterson props for being cool enough to share such great technique explanations with us without the slightest hint of...

Re: Vinnie Colauita

Regardless of your criticism of Vinnie's playing, you made yourself look like an ass by criticizing the people cheering for Vinnie in the video clip, assuming they must have no musical knowledge...

Re: Tony Royster Jr.

Sounding like a young Dennis Chambers includes sounding like a young Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Buddy Rich, and tons of others (and THEIR influences).

Re: Tony Williams

Y'know, somehow I've never really ended up practicing flams, and I was thinking yesterday about whether or not to start incorporating them, and hearing Tony use them finally convinced me I should.

When it comes right down to it, this is what drumming is all about to me.

Re: The Grand Master Buddy Rich

I don't like Thomas Lang solos, but saying Buddy can do everything this guy could do is going a little too far. I'm sure if Buddy would have studied that kind of drumming he would have been amazing...

Re: Billy Cobham

I'm all about the non-elevator-music fusion. Billy is the only drummer who's drumming I can completely percieve as a person just speaking to me, which is why he's my favorite drummer from a musical...

Re: Billy Cobham

Not to impose my own opinions of music on anyone, but if you can badmouth Billy Cobham, you have no music in your soul whatsoever.

Re: YOUR TOP 5: "Best Drumming Songs of all times..."

How would it be missing the point if your top 5 drumming songs contain just that? We all like things for our own reasons.

My top 5, in no order...

Candiria- "300 Percent Density" (title track...

Re: Jon theodor

One of the best young drummers of today. Mars Volta is also one of the best bands. I saw them in August and they gave hands down the best musical performance I've ever seen in my life.

Although I'm not big on these kinds of statements, Dennis is the closest I'd come to making an exception.

Re: Joey Jordison

So, where is all this alleged jazz drumming of Joey's? Everyone's mentioned that he plays the stuff, but no one has cited any examples.

Re: The Grand Master BR

I'm with finnighins on the musical vocabulary point. But I do think Buddy probably played greater within the range of what he did than practically all other drummers within the range of what they do....

Re: Chris Pennie of Dillinger Escape Plan

"Calculating Infinity" is my favorite album, and it's definitely Chris' best drumming album. Very fast, but more notably, alot more complex, with many more jazzy syncopations and what not. A very...

Re: Lars Ulrich

My last thought on this- I actually think alot of Metallica's old stuff would've sounded better with some more complicated fills and whatnot.

Re: Mike Pourtnoy

I always found his timing to be pretty precise. I see what you mean about that "a bit uncertain" thing. At first I thought that too- alot of times on their old stuff, I'd think I hear him miss...
