I think Brian "Brain" Mantia started at the age of 16 and ended up with Primus, Gun's'n'Roses, Tom Waits, Buckethead, Bill Laswell, Godflesh..... . That means his style was pretty much appriciated.

No! Danny Carey did record three songs for him with the help of Les Claypool on his album side one. By the way Adrian Belew does play drums for many of his solo tracks, not as a pro but good enough...
