Re: Name famous songs where the drummer overplays

what worked for me was when I was younger was I started singing while drumming. That cures overplaying pretty quickly. Basically, if the singer is singing - no drum fills.

Listen to Don Henley,...

Re: First Audition

Some of what I posted above may seem unfair, but the reality is that bands thoughts about what the drummer does, are different that what is expected for a guitar player or other instrument. You'd...

Re: First Audition

I don't know if it's always like this, but I spent the better part of last summer auditioning for bands. Probably tried out for 6 or 7 before I finally stuck one. Here's some things I learned.

1....

Re: can the quality of your throne affect your playing?

yes. Get a good throne. Most important, and yet over looked part of the kit. Don't buy that shiny new crash cymbal, buy a good throne. You're playing, and your health will be better for it. I wish...

Re: Yamaha Rock Tour--Holy Guacamole!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked up a set at Christmas time from one of my local music stores. They'd been the backline set for a rock show last summer. I really like them, I finally got to give them a go this week at a...

Re: Ludwig's new Signet 105 drum line!

I think they look really good, and I like all the finishes. Very interesting concept.

Re: Do You Play Another Instrument Besides Drums?

I play acoustic guitar and electric guitar at an intermediate level I'd say, and a bit of mandolin.
If I'm not on the drums I'm usually the lead vocals / rhythm guitarist with the musicians I hang...

Re: New Gear From Gretsch - 2014

I'd guess the Marquee drum line is designed to sit in between the Catalina Maples and the renowns. At least here in Canada, the Cat Maples are between $700-1000 price range, and the Renowns are in...

Re: The virtues of gigging - or otherwise

ah the Zone. That sums it up for me too.
I love playing live for people. That is the start middle and end of drumming for me. I find it really difficult to get motivated to sit at the kit, unless...

Re: Is being over-educated about gear good, or bad?

This is very true. I live outside Toronto, and we have lots of decent music stores around town. Testing out a snare or a cymbal is easy to do.
Typically the drum department is some afterthought...

Re: Is being over-educated about gear good, or bad?

Actually your point is the one I was trying to make. Perhaps I didn't word it well.
I was really just trying to point out that with so much information out there, it makes it harder to choose, and...

Re: Is being over-educated about gear good, or bad?

There is certainly an insane amount of information out there. The trick with internet opinions too, is that you have to read lots and lots of reviews to weed out the good advice from the terrible...

Re: Was Lars' double-bass on the track Dyers Eve a fraud????

yup, he was a huge influence on me as a teenager in the 80's, Ride the lightning is still one of my favorite albums. Battery and Blackened are great double bass songs. I don't really care for...

Re: Pearl free floating question

Your link goes to the right type of bolt, but it might be a little short. See if there's a 75mm version.

Re: Pearl free floating question

According to pearl's part catalog it's a W7/32 x 35mm bolt on the 3 1/2" snare. So you want the same but around 75mm long.

Re: Pearl free floating question

the length of a screw doesn't include the head, just the threaded section.
So yes, you want a 3 1/2" shell, and measure the length of your existing screws and order ones that are 1 1/2" longer than...

Re: Yamaha Stage Custom $899 vs Shell pack $650

I also recently upgraded all my hardware to the Yamaha 600 / 700 series stuff. It's absolutely grade A gear, and relatively light, that you'll never have any problems with.

Personally, I'd do the...

Re: Stage volume

I have a friend who plays lead guitar, and he gets told every 3rd song, he's too loud. He turns down for one song and then it goes right back to where it was. None of my circle of musicians will play...

Re: So... why *has* equipment gotten so expensive?

yeah, I don't find things are expensive at all actually. I'm in Canada, so keep that in mind, and our dollar used to be 65 cents to a US dollar. Now it's almost on par to the US dollar, so it's...

Re: Arranging set lists

I used to prepare our set list for our band.

1st set. Start with a couple medium tempo songs to get warmed up. Throw in a couple ballad type songs. Slowly build up intensity, kind of like reading...

Re: Rototoms up! (Pics)

two rototom notes from a guy who lugged them around for 10 years.

1. I always left the one screw that mounts the cross bar for the roto's to the stand a little loose, so I could just slide the...

Re: Cleaning materials

for the rusty screw threads and hardware bits, soak them in vinegar for a couple hours. It'll dissolve much of the rust, then super fine 0000 steel wool after.

Re: Need acoustic/electric drum buying advice!

If you really like the Pearl e-drum sounds, the brain is made for them by Alesis, and their e-drums are not expensive at all. You just have to decide if you like their pads.
If you search the web,...

Re: Need acoustic/electric drum buying advice!

One thing, that Newegg ad doesn't mention specifically what the hardware is. The Gretsch kit doesn't come with any normally except floor tom legs and the tom mounts. So you'd be looking for a...

Re: Premier Genista at Musicians Friend

I agree with opentune. I like to have something different than everyone else. (Especially after owning Pearl Exports!) I really dig the Orange Sparkle finish.
