Re: Post your Greatest Weakness

Getting really into the music while playing. If we're playing something I really feel for, on an emotional level, I end up doing sloppy doublebass drum work and tend to rush or slow the tempo. :P

Re: moved the hi hat to the right

I played that way at a set they had set up at my local Sam Ash; it was so much fun! I want to get a remote hihat just so I can play that way! :D

Re: How to be more relaxed!

I've had relaxation problems in the past, too, particularly while playing jazz. My wrists and hands tense up, which of course ruins any technique I'd try to play. :\

Re: two same size floor toms?

One's tight, one's low. With my drum teacher's set, his higher one sounds a little higher than normal, and the lower one sounds like a tympani. :P

Re: My gift to the forum:

Yeah, I was about to ask this -- is there a Mac equivalent of this program somewhere you know of?

I can't even tell the difference between 98 and XP, lol. They haven't done anything to their...

Re: Should I buy a kit just for gigging?

If you have the money, then yes, definitely. For me, getting my set damaged (at least a little) while transporting my set is pretty much inevitable, and I hate it. An extra set for convenience's...

Re: Kettledrums in an orchestre.

Kettle drums, other than drum set, are the best kind of percussion. Definitely do it! :D

Also, if you're looking for a book to start with, definitely get this one:

Re: I seem to have lost my way...

Yeah, I remember that line; that's during the "lake of fire" section, right? I play to DT more than anyone else (and I know that's not necessarily a good thing).

Regardless, if you're going to...

Re: I seem to have lost my way...

Dream Theater without double bass?? That sounds a bit sketchy to me, if not impossible. ;)

Re: I seem to have lost my way...

Here it is; work on it like you've never worked on anything before. One useful strategy is to play #5-8 (without stopping) and then repeat them over again.

Re: I seem to have lost my way...

Stick Control, the snare training book; most drummers only use the first page (well, those that I know anyway... :P), but even that one page is enough to occupy you for hours upon hours of training....

Re: I seem to have lost my way...

Knowing me, I'd probably spend the whole time playing to my iPod. :P

What I'd think to be more effective is to spend about 5 minutes doing nothing but 16th notes (or 16th-triplets) to a metronome...

Re: Mike Portnoy

Like most people, I'm sure, I register here and immediately head to my favorite drummer's thread. :)

Mike Portnoy was the guy who got me so avidly into playing. My first DT album was "Awake," and...
