Re: Is one genre of music really harder to play than another

Difficult=difficult. People have developed clear benchmarks for that over centuries. If something is difficult but in your culture, then it's all around you and you have more opportunities to learn a...

Re: Is one genre of music really harder to play than another

Complexity is not subjective; some genres, songs and musics really are harder than others, either rhythmically, melodically or both. East Indian percussion is the most difficult on the planet, taking...

Re: Abused Mapex Orion Kit

I would take off the heads and look inside. Are the plies separating, is the wood splitting etc.? Do you notice any large bumps/bubbles inside or outside the shells?

This is a good brand and good...

Re: The BeaTles

I do miss many opportunities, actually. It just seems like I don't because you're intolerant of anyone disagreeing with you on this topic. Oh well.

Re: Chili Peppers should have stayed home.

I'm surprised RHCP wore so much clothing. Usually they're buck naked on stage. Or close to it.

Re: Disco beat - hihat technique

Good advice.

Also, check to make sure the angle on the hat pedal isn't too steep. Usually that's not a problem with hats but it's worth checking.

Re: Abidextrous drumming...

Freaky, I had no idea about horses have a dominant side. What do they do that shows it?

Re: Fat bass sound

I would also consider depth and thicker heads. A little more depth can take a drum from merely fat to morbidly obese, sternum-crashing bass tones.

Re: Was Lars' double-bass on the track Dyers Eve a fraud?

I think ALL of Ringo's double bass parts were faked.

Re: Playing Closed Hi-Hats

Great observations and advice. Good use of the hats will add so much finesse to the music.

Don't think you have to keep the hats at the same pressure all the time. I pump my left heel up and down...

Re: Bot my new 24' X 24' rehearsal room!

Bitchin'! Great room. My man cave is 15 by 12 and I wish I had more room.

The slated ceiling will actually help acoustically and your drum is in the perfect position.

Re: Is being over-educated about gear good, or bad?

I'm not quite sure the premise here is accurate. I think many drummers eagerly read everything they could about drums, even if there wasn't as much, and were fairly well-informed.

I think the...

Re: Drum set pride

90 percent of your sound is in heads and tuning. The appearance of anything matters a lot to many people, including me. I wouldn't sit behind a trashed-looking duct taped set, no matter how "good" it...

Re: Look what I did! (Stave drum build) [PIC HEAVY]

Crazy! How did you do that? I think I have most of the tools, including a table saw. How did you calculate the angles, etc. etc.? I always thought you needed all kinds of exotic tools to make a stave...

Re: Ever been compared to a celebrity / legendary drummer?

Everyone compares me to Ringo, which angers me to no end.

I've also been compared to Danny Seraphine.

Re: Being a drummer and a dad.

Until they're about 10, kids will come running when they hear you practicing and either demand you stop practicing (younger kids will stand there and literally scream for you to stop) or they will...

Re: Ceramic Drums

I agree about the snare beds. Also, I hear a lot of people obsess about perfection of bearing edges but to me, that's overrated. The fact that drums sound fine with the purposeful imperfection of...

Re: Ceramic Drums

Excellent points. A single-point lug would simplify assembly and accuracy but it would focus stress in a smaller area, which is a real concern with something brittle like ceramics. Also good idea...

Re: Ceramic Drums

HA! A dance step would be cool.

I really did mean the holes in the rims (a.k.a. triple-flanged hoops) are oblong. All the holes in shells I have ever seen are perfectly round. The holes in the...

I only share with people I know well. The classy thing to do is to buy the loaner a beer, cappuccino, whatever. Sounds like these people are total douchebags. You can bet they are used to ripping...

Re: The things us drum building types get excited about :)

Wow, that's a serious drill press! I have a drill press, a light-duty model from Slave Harbor Tools that I welded a wall mount for. They are really invaluable for all sorts of things but yours should...

Re: Rant about being jerked around by a band

Excellent advice. If they have to pay for your time, they will value it. Essentially, they will have invested in you. Then, when it comes time to make a decision, they will think "We've had to pay...
