Converting a Slingerland Radio King tom into a snare drum

Hey guys, I recently acquired a 13 x 9 Slingerland Radio King tom shell through a drummers' group on Facebook, and I wish to convert it into a snare drum. The drum is a three-ply maple shell with...

Re: Great Deal On Mapex Armory

That is a great deal! The drum set at my church is a Mapex Armory, and it sounds wonderful.

Re: would you guess that this is oil or lacquer

It looks to me like it is tung oil blended with some other varnish ingredient, since pure tung oil does not dry very well.

Re: Rack Toms - sizes & mounted off the kick or not?

I personally prefer to have my toms mounted on a rack or on stands so they do not sympathetically vibrate with the bass drum or vice versa. My drum set is a PDP Double Drive with 8", 10", 12", 14",...

Re: Snares won't tighten on vintage Lyra 14x9?

I would either file the holes in the hoop to make them into proper snare cord slots, or switch out the 200 resonant head for a 300. The heftier 300 head will have a better sound if you are playing...

Re: Is DW JAZZ series similar to Ludwig Legacy maples?

Great minds think alike! I couldn't help but notice the similarities when I listened to demos on YouTube, and played on some in person. It is my dream to buy two Radio King sets in the white marine...

Re: Should I buy this 28" kick drum?

I would go for it. Bigger is better.

Re: Whats the difference between PDP and DW?

The PDP Platinum series drums were quite good. I only ever owned the 14 x 5 solid maple snare, but one of my drummer buddies has the whole kit, and it is fantastic. The Platinum series is definitely...

Re: SNARE TUNING

I follow the same process for tuning my drums. I complete this process, and then measure everything with my Drum Dial so I can write down the tension levels once I get the sound I want. For my snare...

Re: Buying new snare but which one?

It sounds like my kind of snare! I am so happy to hear that you enjoy it. It is not very often that I can find a snare that still cuts at such a high tuning, so I really got lucky with my 14 x 6.5...

Re: Tom reso head for "dead" sound

Keep the Evans Hydraulic heads, and tighten the resonant heads until the sound starts to choke. I found out this trick by accident when I was playing around with the tuning configuration of my...

Re: Who else uses a marching snare with a drum set?

Update: my marching snare is DEFINITELY much louder than my other drums, it just doesn’t seem like it when I’m sitting at the kit, and the DIY insulation soundproofing job I did on the underside of...

Re: Bass pedal toe stop

I have never liked toe stops. Luckily for me, none of the pedals I have owned came with a toe stop, but if I end up buying one that does, I will take it off before I even set it up with the kit.

Re: How often should I replace drum heads?

I never have had to replace resonant heads, unless I am buying new drums, and I do not like the heads that are on it. As for batter heads, I buy coated, and there seems to be no established timeline...

Re: First gig tips? Let's make a thread.

1. Have several pairs of spare sticks within reach.
2. Have a backup snare drum in case something on your primary one malfunctions or you bust a head.
3. Have at least two drum keys on your person...

Re: Good Buddy Rich quote on practice

Exactly! I think he would probably rage-quit halfway through his first recording session because the other Beatles would keep stopping him and tell him to "quiet down" when he does more than one fill...

Re: How many drum kits have you owned?

In my seven years of drumming, I have only owned two kits. My first kit was a 5-piece Tama Stagestar that I got on January 2, 2011. I used the original snare as a side snare and timbale because its...

Re: What drum trends do you NOT miss?

For me, it is power toms, and toms without a resonant head. I could never wrap my mind around why anyone would want either of these.

Re: Snare drum with wrinkles? Anyone do this?

I share your sentiments regarding drop-tuned snare drums. The rebound is terrible, and all you can do is dampen the heck out of it and be left with the dead sound that is popular for reasons that...

Re: What's the best snare you have tried?

For me, it is a tie between the Fibes Buddy Rich model, and a 14 x 7 Slingerland Radio King in White Marine Pearl finish that I got to play at the boutique drum shop that used to be in Orlando near...

Re: Who else uses a marching snare with a drum set?

Oddly enough, it is not much louder than my PDP 14 x 8 Maple Bubinga unless I am strictly playing rim shots at the current tuning. When I am playing in church with the worship band, I use Promark...

My snare luckily came with its own stand that goes low enough to accommodate it.

Re: Worst expensive kit you ever played?

For me, it was a beautiful 5-piece Slingerland Buddy Rich set at a local boutique drum shop that was otherwise in mint condition, but it had Evans Hydraulic heads on the toms, and an Aquarian Deep...

Who else uses a marching snare with a drum set?

On October 24 of last year, I became the proud owner of a 15 x 12 Slingerland Sound King marching snare that was made in May of 1965, and it quickly became my primary snare drum to use with my PDP...
