Re: Is this "Unprofessional"

Well, you should always carry your brushes with you, but that's not what you asked.

Never give anyone the impression that you're not prepared or can't handle the gig. People are always going to...

Re: No more jam sessions for me. I'm done

Dude, I feel your pain. I know it's a horrible feeling, but I really think you should keep at it. The path to success is paved with a lot of failures. Hang in there. Let it be inspiration to...

Re: Improvising over bossa nova exemplas?

I concur. We Americans think of bossa nova as a type of jazz (which it is), but remember, in Brazil it was/is pop music. A lot of bossa from Brazil which doesn't include American musicians like...

Personally, I use both. Why waste a whole finger?

Re: Hand technique concepts - Jojo Mayer vs. Bill Bachman?

I haven't really checked out any of Bill's stuff, but the Jojo DVD is killer. I don't like to trash talk or tell people they are wrong, but if you're not getting anything out of that DVD, or you...

Playing over the bar line

Hey everybody,

Here's a little exercise I've been using for years to help lengthen my phrases and develop improvisatory coordination over new rhythmic patterns.

Re: The level system?

I didn't realize that this was a "system". I've always called it "drumming". I certainly can't see how playing this way could be considered lazy. It's just efficiency of motion.

I make my...

Re: Jazz comping speed - wrist/finger

Check out page 9 or the Riley book and just work through those for awhile at a nice slow tempo. Take your time and gradually speed up. I don't know you, but I feel like maybe you're just trying to...

Re: Tips for Moving To Traditional Grip

A forum isn't really the best place to try to explain something like a grip. Your best bet is to get yourself a good instructor. Failing that (or in addition to it), I highly recommend Jojo Mayer's...

Re: Recording with K Cons

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. All the stressing was about nothing. Once I got in the studio, it sounded awesome, with no tape. All I did was tone down my technique a little bit and stayed...

Recording with K Cons

So I'm heading into the studio for the first time since I got my 22" medium thin low. I've been recording it on a little Zoom digital recorder just to get an idea of what things might sound like,...

Re: When have you truly 'mastered' a given BPM?

I'm going to have to agree with everyone else here and say that an hour is more than excessive. I see your logic, and a little headroom is always good to have, but working your way up to an hour is...

Re: Basic Paradiddle Combinations

Both. I usually play them straight for a while first, then spend some time shifting the accents around. All the downbeats, all the Es, &s, and As, first two, middle two, last two, etc., etc.

Happy new year, everyone.

Here's a little exercise I like to do to get my hands moving again after not touching sticks for the last two weeks during the holidays. Enjoy.

Re: Recording advice/tips.

That's all great advice from Kamak.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one of those snares. It's hard to say without hearing it.

As far as changing the heads go, if you're happy with...

Re: How to progress on Tommy Igoe's Lifetime Warmup?

The key to playing faster is playing slower…MUCH slower. It's all about getting the mechanics under your hands so that they're completely second nature, like using a fork, or brushing your teeth. ...
