Re: What is classified as professional gear?

In my experience, if it has "professional" or "pro" printed on it, it ain't. ;o)

Re: Good short film about a drummer

I cringed at the introduction of other instruments too!!
But maybe it's saying to the less musical of us, this is music even tho it's just drums and vocals - maybe the filmmakers felt they needed to...

Re: When The Band Has An "Off" Night

Something I've often noticed - bad pre-gig rehearsal >> great gig!

Re: Who needs a double pedal?

My tuppence worth - if I can play something easier and smoother with two hands than one, then I will. If I have to do it with one for any reason, then I will work on it.
Same with my feet....

Re: What are you working on?

Right now I'm practising Ye Mariners All for my folk-rock band - the Fairport version - they made me do it on Sat without any rehearsal, and only a few listens, and I just about staggered thru it! ...

Re: Anyone else??

I have a couple of obsessive rituals when at a gig - one is to always go back in the room after packing up at the end, when everything is in the car, just to make sure I haven't left anything.

Re: Drumming Saved My Life

Great story! I checked it out cos I believe that drumming is such a (searches for words!) - an enriching thing - it can be fun, challenging, intricate, crazy, magical, healing, liberating, etc etc -...

Re: Your best "wait what?" moment in drumming

I shouldn't blow my own trumpet! (or beat my own drum??)
But when you said about people rewinding to figure out what happened, reminded me of the time years ago when the keyboard player's dad in my...

Re: Snare Drum Travel - What do you do?

I was told by a pro jazz drummer very early on to leave the snares on. I obey Master!
People used to tell me it strains the snare wires, you should turn off when not in use.
But I trusted the man....

Re: Complexes & Tendencies

Polyanna, I just gotta say this, sorry - I hate your avatar!! It's not the insect, I've checked out your band site and this pic is so unflattering. Sorry.

Re: Transitioning from e-kit cymbals to the real deal.

I see a lot of drummers with 2-3 inches between their hats, and I suppose if you're way demonstrative and showy, and want to get lots of sound when you stamp them down, that's fine - but me, I have...

Re: What Other Instruments Do You Guys Play? ( Besides Drums)

Tin whistle.

:o) One day after lugging the drums home, I thought, what can I learn to play that is easy to learn, easy to carry around? Harmonica - no. Tin whistle - Hmmm.
I have tin whistles...

Re: How can I play this without hitting the sticks together?

or swap hands and hit the hh with the left, snare with the right.
I'm playing a song with a new band at the mo which caused me some trouble until I tried this, and I'm also swapping hands at...

Re: question for all drummers

I also got no support from family. And my lack of confidence didn't help - but playing drums was a passion with me, and I stuck at it, and boy I'm glad I did.
Many parents don't understand that...

Re: Counting...

Counting is for learners. Whether it's learning drumming from the start, or learning something new or unfamiliar, like a weird time sig, even if you're experienced.
We all have an internal clock,...

Re: Muse: what am I missing here?

Labels / genres - "who knows what prog rock" is?
Well, I know what it WAS - I was in a "progressive rock band" in the 70s when it all kicked off.
Yes the Beatles were prog! In the later times....

Re: Losing a Stick

Sitting on a stick or two is a good idea, only I'd lose them when I get excited and jump up and down on the throne!!

I often used to lose a stick, always the right hand one, and I just got good at...

Re: Bass Drum Rebound

I'd say the cold might have something to do with it -
the plastic does stiffen, and become more brittle, in the cold.
Having freezing hands and feet probably doesn't help either!! :o)

Re: People Who Count Off The Song At A Different Tempo To The Song's Actual Tempo

I've worked with many guitarists who had no sense of rhythm, and had no idea that the count in was to establish the tempo as well as being a countdown to liftoff! And they usually still don't get it...

Re: Studio annoyance; venting! proceed with caution!

Reminds me of my early recording sessions - when it was all new and weird to me!
First one was in the converted cellar of a terraced town house, 4-track.

Some time later, with a different band,...

Re: What are your Drumming Prejudices?

Wow, reading thru all that tired me out!!
The underlying message I got from SGT drummer's original post (dunno if he intended it or not) was that we should maybe identify and examine our prejudices,...

Re: Weirdest thing you've used as a throne?

Nothing weird in the throne department, but I once managed to get to a rehearsal without any sticks!!! We were in a building that had a kitchen, so I looked through the drawers and found two fish...
