you might check out, Dupuytren's Contracture, on google, I'm not saying you have this but it's something you might keep your eye on. I have it and it doesn't bother my playing.

My favorite, saw him at the club Blackhawk ( San Francisco) with Ray Draper. Booker Little don't remember the bass player, a kick ass group. Tried to copy his playing, got just alittle bit.

putting on headphones or any ear protection will deaden any overtones, I noticed this when I had to get hearing aids.

A lot of those drummerd that you mentioned also used calf skin drum heads they are a lot of difference between calf skin and plastic heads.This could also effect the sound.( By the way I own and play...

When I was learning morse code I used to send messages to people in the audience, didn't help my drumming at all, but it was fun.
