Re: Reconsidering some things

I've got a nice new Renown set, and a really nice vintage Ludwig set...but I got so fed up with the one-nighter drill that I decided to carry my beater Rogers kit as pre-set up as I could. I've got...

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple

I got 'em and the lacquer finish is so delicate I'm afraid to play out with them. Are the Cats any better??

Re: Are We Really As Open-Minded As We Think We Are?

And Eastern culture does not do this? LOL.

It seems like the implicit assumption in this discussion is that all music is equal, that all musical eras are equally good. But if you look at the end...

Re: Birth of the ride cymbal

Fascinating! I've been thinking about this a lot lately. So Clarke started in the days of press rolls? Wow what a sea change to go through. I didn't realize press rolls were still happening in...

Re: Things you do that annoy your bandmates

I used to be too intimated to wank before the gig, and would just warm up on the first set. But lately I've taken to warming up more and it probably is bothering them now, too bad.

I probably...

Re: Trying to practice closed roll, no luck, tips needed ...

That's what I thought, but as usual I needed validation after some of the stuff I've heard.

It's been a year since I started asking questions here and you have been a great help. Been practicing...

Re: Trying to practice closed roll, no luck, tips needed ...

So what about the other fingers? Are they pretty loose? I watched some rolls on youtube where the player's fingers were really loose, but my teacher says all fingers should be firmly on the stick...

Re: Drummers of divorced parents

Definitely think you should take a practice pad to one house and when you're there concentrate on chops. Not having the kit handy will help you focus.

Re: Wraps or finished shell. What floats your boat & why.

I *was* a sucker for wood grain finishes, too, but after I got my Gretsch Renown I got over it. No matter how careful I am, stuff happens and now I hate to take them out on a job. I'm sure they're...

Re: Trying to practice closed roll, no luck, tips needed ...

I'd like to hear other opinions on this. Personally I have enough problems with straying sticks to deliberately drag them across the head at 120 bpm.

Re: The decline of the double stroke

The timing of this thread is funny, because I've been thinking about this for quite awhile.. Doubles are my default too, and and practice them constantly, but it's been really hard incorporating even...

Re: Nashville Number System

Would you please explain the circled items, "pre" and "ch"? Also the Roman numerals - are those chords, or song structure like AABA or ???

I'm so glad C&W musicians around here finally went to...

Re: Tennis Ellbow

I had it in both elbows a few years ago, not related to drumming because I had stopped playing for awhile. Went to the doc and he gave me a brace. It takes months for the pain to go away.

Re: need help with press rolls

Well, almost a year later and I think I've made progress. Thanks to everyone for your help. I actually printed out some of the advice and read them off the floor tom during practice.
I even have the...

Re: Mini Rant

Get over it. The older you get the less interested anyone is in your pastimes. I have separate music friends. Mainly they're the ones I'm playing gigs with, and people in other bands who play the...

Re: Guitar player concerned of me speeding up

Practicing with a metronome or drum machine helps you get used to what perfect time feels like, but you could also buy a Tempo Ref. It measures your backbeats and gives you half the metronome time...

Re: Can't play by myself

I played for over 30 years and quit for 5. Sure it was always more fun to play with band. When I went to work playing full time, the practicing really fell off due to volume and lack of a 2nd set...

Re: Underplaying?

Yup, I've been thinking this for awhile too. Other players are often not good at expressing what they like. They know it when they hear it. They'll try to compliment you for your taste but then go...

Re: Metronomes: Yay or Nay?

What I've noticed with using a metronome playing drums, guitar or piano is that it helps me relax. It's easy to start pushing a fill or a lead run, but with a metronome you find you don't have to...

Re: In your opinion, what makes the difference between intermediate and advanced drum

In every other endeavor there is a level above advanced, and that's Expert. That's where the top players and great unsung pros belong.

Advanced is, well, more advanced than Intermediate. I...

Re: Hand position in traditional grip

I have a similar concern about my trad grip. I noticed not only the angle the great jazz drummers held their stick at, but also that they rested the stick practically over the fingernail, whereas I...
