Re: Multiple Instruments?

Well I'm on the flipside where I learnt piano first and then the drums. Learning the piano made it alot easier for me to learn the drums as I already had developed a good sense of time and understood...

Re: I am 33. Am I too old to start learning?

Well that's what i was trying to say in my first post, that the adults progressed better most likely because of what they practiced and how much they practiced. The other thing i forgot to...

Re: I am 33. Am I too old to start learning?

You do make some very good points Matt and I do agree with most of them. I'm not doubting your teaching experience, or the number of students you've had. I will admit i did make a few assumptions,...

Re: I am 33. Am I too old to start learning?

Matt, the thing is, all things being equal, the child will learn faster than the adult. The kids you were teaching wernt kids who showed an interest in drums and wanted lessons, from what I can...

Re: Weirdest thing you've used as a throne?

I once used my drum throne to put my practice pad on, and used my ordinary chair as a throne. Was too lazy to get my snare stand for the pad...wasn't a smart idea.

Re: Travis Barker

Wow, that video made me laugh, as did some of the comments. Did not know Beiber (kind of) plays the drums.

I agree with you that there will always be a tendency to overstate mediocrity, but has...

Re: Travis Barker

Surely you mean Travis Barker. Although the same could be said about Beiber when it comes to the music industry. That Vinnie/Gadd/Weckl video is absolutely amazing, it's a real shame when the average...

Re: why there are so many travis barker haters???

Couldn't have put it better myself. Also, its not only the fanboys, its the general public. Most non-musicians, who have no clue on drumming, when the find out i play the drums, ask: "oh have you...

Re: Practising Hand and Foot Combinations

I'm currently working on a similar thing and here's what i've been doing. Play a single roll with your hands (Right hand lead at 16th notes) and do the first 8 excercises of stick control with your...

Re: just started playing the drums

Consider getting a teacher, if not, get a DVD such as Tommy Igoe's Great Hands for a Lifetime, or Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer. That will help you learn correct hand technique....

Re: Comparisons on Mars Volta drummers

You know that John Frusciante from the RHCP (well not anymore) does a fair bit of the studio guitar work for the Mars Volta. If you like Frusciante's solo music theres a good chance you'd like TMV....

Re: Comparisons on Mars Volta drummers

Hey Toddy, thanks for those clips, I havn't seen that live version of Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt. I agree with you in some aspects that the Mars Volta have gone backwards. Deloused in the Comatorium...

Comparisons on Mars Volta drummers

I know that the music of Mars Volta is not really everyones cup of tea, but I feel that every drummer would find something interesting and impressive in their music. While I don't feel their music...

Re: What do these note markers mean in drum music?

The '+' just means to close the hi hat, and play any further hi hat notes closed, the 'o' means to play it open and close it only when you next play the hi hat, or when you see the '+'. For example,...

Re: Have you ever "underplayed" because you fear embarassment or failure?

Hey man, the beautiful thing about practice is that you can stuff up so badly, and nobody will ever know. Okay apart from maybe your neighbours. But if you look at any drummer, and maybe they play...

Re: Acoustic kit advice for anti acoustic band mates

In a rock band, yes its the truth. There are some places where it would be entirely acceptable to gig with an e-kit, but this is not one of them.

Re: If you could choose 1 exercise to make your right foot better...

Crazy thing...I was working on the Immigrant Song today as well. Really is a great song to learn bass drum control and speed.

Re: Acoustic kit advice for anti acoustic band mates

The truth is that your band won't be taken as seriously in a gig if you're playing on an electronic kit. Watch a real drummer play on real drums is part of the show that many people will pay...

Re: Chad Smith's Hi-Hat Thing

He is throwing a few 16ths every now and then...and judging from the videos i've seen of him, The hi-hat pulse is due to a slight release in foot pressure on the beat. Im guessing he's also using...

Re: Flaming Drum Sticks

I know, I feel the same way too, but there are plenty of entertainer/musicians who feel that the show is just as important as the music. I don't agree, but its an equally valid way of looking at it....
