Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Physical or emotional abuse(lack of attention to 'do no harm') are NEVER to be tolerated...'Authority' allows no exception...as 'authority' is lost when morality goes out the door and you start...

Re: The foot is the key to groove

I think the real center point of timing is keeping consistency BETWEEN limbs...so not relying on any one limb for establishing the feel I want...and having the ability to move time around any combo...

Re: Totally lost

I echo the suggestion to record then take the time to listen....and set a metronome up and lock it in...then see where the tempo goes and who is taking it there.

if its you, then start breaking...

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

Auditions are hard.

Have a bad day and both the auditioner and auditioned lose out.

I am beginning to think an audition should last long enough for people to get to know each other and for the...

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

Learning how to learn is what I would say is most important...

Avoiding burn-out, constant re-examination of your precepts and devising exercises....closely observing your playing via recording.

Re: Anti-Slip Drumsticks?

I'm with WhoIsTony...Moving into a dynamic mobile agile grip helps a lot.

A stiff 'death' grip on a stick really accentuates anything impeding the friction between stick and skin.

I think...

Re: Simon Phillips talks 'bout open handed, dynamics, big sound and recording :)

One of the more interesting comments I have heard about Simon from a non-drummer was "I didn't expect him to talk like that".

I never got clarification on what exactly was meant...but I always try...

Re: Possibly my first serious thread. Sexism.

I think many men, especially when fueled by alcohol, fail to see a woman's side of the mating dance...and erroneously extrapolate their experiences to the woman's experiences.

Men are, on the...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

In the end, I think "Classic Rock" is/was a marketing tool to bring attention to a catalog of songs owned/licensed by/to interests attempting to sell their use.

I'm not so sure there is an...

Re: Do I Need A New Drum Teacher?

I hate to jump on the bandwagon and say "yes"...

..but I know that I would be a questionable teacher at this point...and I've been playing for over 40 years.

Teaching is a skill all in...

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

I think there are loads of pre-modern era music pieces that STILL are recognized by the populace...and enjoyed...and none of them have a 'drum part' as we might identify it.

I think the key to...

Re: Fitting in the Diddles

Record yourself while playing with the band and see for yourself what is up.

I strongly suggest continuing to do this all the time...and take the time to listen back....pref. with a recorder that...

Re: I'm overwhelmed

I like the analogy of learning language.

We use language every day...and follow rules and display rapidity of expression we could never do by thinking about the rules themselves.

...same thing...

I have a real short-coming in being able to appreciate country.

I grew up with it...and it became the focal point of all I assessed as "ignorant"...from the song structure to the lyrical content...
