Re: Jim Gordon

The other wrinkle I've heard to this story is that he stole the melody from his then-girlfriend Rita Coolidge.

Regardless, I also read that Clapton has meticulously seen to it that Gordon...

Re: This year, a view from both sides.

I hear ya. I've been a work-a-holic myself in years past. I actually liked it at one time, but at this point, it's not for me. The truth is, I'm ready to retire. Unfortunately, that's probably a good...

Re: This year, a view from both sides.

When I see what you're doing, I'm jealous of your life, Andy. I wish my "day job" consisted of doing awesome stuff in the area I'm most passionate about. That looks fantastically cool.

Re: Should you always be keeping time with the left foot?

My thoughts about the hi-hat echo Anthony's; I've spent a lot of time working out my left foot coordination so I can do what I want with my hi-hat playing. Occasionally, it sort of goes on...

Re: What performance defines drummers as musicians for you?

This is, to me, a perfect performance. I'm actually not sure which of the several drummers who played on this album tracked this song. There isn't one note I'd change or leave out.

Re: Things guitarist tell drummers to do...

I seem to recall Mick Fleetwood recorded his drum parts that way. I could be wrong, though.

Re: Published in Modern Drummer

Congratulations! That is quite an honor. I'll keep my eyes open for the issues when they hit the stand.

Re: Counting on a Funky Groove

I always count the smallest subdivision I have to play throughout; in other words, I count the rests, too. So in this case, if I'm going to count at all, I'm going to count all the 16th notes...

Re: Trouble playing rock stuff

You do have to put in the hours listening. I always feel the same way when people ask how to learn the "jazz" feel.

Backbeat music requires different things from the drums. Whether you're used to...

Re: Playing the cymbals softer than the drums.

For as long as I can remember, I've played backbeat music with cymbal dynamics on the softer side. If the full set is miked, whether live or in the studio, that's my default approach.

The one...

Re: Playing with a click track

I have a question, Bermuda. Does a player starting out today need to focus on working with the basic 'tock tick tick tick' anymore?

Even though I find playing with a loop the easiest, I spent a...

Re: Ghost notes and shell material (snare)

Here's where Andy comes in and drops knowledge and makes us all reconsider what we said.

I welcome it, man. The more I know, the more arrogant I can be.

Telling it like it is,

Re: Endings

I suck at big endings. Seriously. I'd rather have the song end with a full stop so I don't have to play them. I'm self-conscious about not ending every song the same way, so I tend to force in things...

Re: Jazz

Maybe neither here nor there, but veracity in quote attribution died with the advent of the world wide web. Judging by social media sites and internet forums, you'd think Morgan Freeman and Einstein...

Re: Ghost notes and shell material (snare)

All of the above is fantastic. Totally agree.

I do think tuning, including strainer tension, are things you can do wrong with a snare drum to mess up how ghost notes sound. But the main thing is...

Re: Just saw "The Wrecking Crew" movie

That definitely has something to do with its appeal to me. I also loved how unassuming those cats were. Roger Hawkins didn't really believe he was a good drummer until Jerry Wexler told him he was. ...

Re: Playing with a click track

Even in my little world, playing with a click track is a fact of life. You have to be able to do it, at least when recording. So much music is edited in post-production now that the click is needed...

Re: Dave King's Rational Funk ~ thoughts? opinions? comments?

I hadn't seen these before and I have to say, so far, I'm not impressed. He's a really good player and seems very knowledgeable, but I don't like the delivery. It seems like he's trying to be the...

Re: R.i.P Vic Firth

Sad news. We've lost so many of the titans of that era in the last few years.

RIP, Vic Firth.

Re: Jazz ride - triplet and 16th note

There really isn't a rule for switching between swing feel and straight 8ths. Some music is written that way. An example would be Eighty-One from the Miles Davis recording, E.S.P. Each soloist plays...

Re: Just saw "The Wrecking Crew" movie

I need to see the movie, but this is startling news to hear about Lang, if true. I was just talking to a musician friend who teaches at a local music school about Lang. At this point in his career, I...

Re: I'm a jaded music industry guy

Okay, I get you. Yes, I can relate to that. I guess I see less of this particular type of ensemble than you are receiving regular doses of, so it didn't strike that same nerve for me. But sure, over...
