Re: Ideal 2 Floor Tom Sizes?

Depends on portability.

If I already employ a 16 would I want to go smaller? Nope, that's what rack toms are for? I would go 16 and 18 on the floor. Beyond 1 up 1 down it's all preference.

Re: Should I keep the 24?

I have that tuning the reso (bottom) head higher than the batter head might help.

Re: Timing test

I like that... 850 and 902

I tried both space bar and mouse click. I wonder how much lag suffers from the interface?

Thanks!

Re: Tommy Igoe's Great Hands For a Lifetime DVD

That's a great takeaway for me too. Thanks!

For the OP: I've used this cd for a few years now and yes I have found it a beneficial routine. As for routines, the reality was that I really didn't...

Re: Best drums under $1500?

IMHO...

Keller shells (with or without mounted hardware).

eBay (not intended as a shameless plug) offers them and often there are incredible savings associated with the purchase or auction...

Re: What's your practice routine?

Lately I've been working out at the gym, mowing the yard, swimming in the pool, throwing in a bit of hand drums (conga, tar, some riq, djembe etc..) with some pad work and perhaps 2x per week on the...

Re: Am I the ONLY guy that likes the sound of poplar drums?

I love the sound of my Birch floor tom.

The rest of the kit is maple & a steel snare and it all sounds good too.

I picked up a Forum poplar floor tom a while ago to use with a poplar kit I...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

I lived through Disco and the ensuing rise of the DJ's. To this day I don't go out to see DJ's - I go out to see live music.

DJ's/Bar owners put so many good cover bands out of business starting...

Re: Best Jazz Songs

Joe Morello was masterful on the kit. Personally, as there are MANY great drummers out there both past and present, Morello (in my mind) might be very approachable musically. He also conducted...

Re: Why Musicians DON'T Deserve to Get Paid

Many "musicians" out and out suck. Period.

Do you want a quality live band? You pay for quality or you plug an electronic device into a PA and listen to that.

Re: Favorite floor tom size and why?

16X16 Birch 60's Slingerland.

I really like Birch Floor toms. Maple works for the racks and the Bass but Birch has a punch and clarity that comes through. Maybe I have better hearing on my right...

Re: Favorite throw off and why?

1. Simple
2. Stamped steel at a thickness that will withstand abuse. How thick? I don't know, perhaps 1/8th inch. Substantial. Plain surfaces as to not trap moisture or dust that could cause...

Re: Smaller Drums In Front Of The Kick Drum???

What? Huh? They are snare drums, picking up resonance and for what reason I don't know.

I need enlightenment as well. It's looks cool and it's yet another drum you can hump in and out of...

Re: Playing with a click track

I have heard this suggested several times in my life. Usually by an inadequate guitarist who for some reason felt the need.

Hint: the drummer is the click track and everyone else needs to keep...

Re: The ubiquity of smaller kits

1 up and 1 down has been around for quite a while now. 2 up and 1 down as well. Not everyone is endeared to double pedals.

Two bass drums are talked about quite often, some want two identical...

Re: How much should I sell these cymbals for?

I found some el cheapo's at a flea market. Paid $5.00 took them home and made a sort of wind chime out of each one and sold them at $20 per.

But... since you're talking name recognition (i.e....

Re: Better to buy a used fully set up kit or go parts at a time

Excellent strategy!
Along with your own snare and hi hats perhaps your own snare stand, hi hat stand, and bass drum pedal. Go quality on the hardware. I would recommend Pearl (price and quality). ...

Re: Can't decide on a rack tom size for a jazz kit

I would say 10's or 12's... 10's tune nicer to my ear.

That said, any drum that isn't tuned well will sound like you're beating on a wet cardboard box.
