Blues Drumming Done Right

Here's Fred Below (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5m7Dve4ibo), the amazing drummer for the Aces, Little Walter's band, playing a classic Chicago shuffle. That's Louis Myers, the Aces guitar player,...

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

There's something else that wants mentioning. 99% of the studio work I've done involves reading charts. Those charts are written for one reason only: so the music will sound the way the...

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

I like the videos where she's wearing those little corsets and sports bras and fetish gear while sitting behind those big drum sets she has. Wowzers. Someone definitely knows what they're doing here....

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

I've heard Jimi Hendrix described as being nothing more than a really great blues guitar player, and he was definitely a truly great blues guitar player! One of the greatest, no question.

You...

Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

For me it was more a question of influence. Jimi Hendrix changed the way guitars were played and heard; Keith Moon didn't really have much on an affect on drumming at all. John Bonham, though,...

Re: Tribute bands are the new symphonic orchestra

It's a ridiculous assertion. You might as well say that a raw frankfurter is the new lobster thermidor, because they're both food.

Baroque, Romantic, and Impressionist music are all considered to...

Re: Songs composed by drummers

What kind of music do you compose? Are you recording any of your compositions?

Re: Blues Drum Kit

I have to wonder if he actually used those very drums when he finally got to record with Muddy. Actually, I think the first recordings he was on were by Jimmy Rodgers, on the Chess label. I probably...

Blues Drum Kit

Courtesy of the Real Blues Forum (https://www.facebook.com/groups/163835903692878/). Here's a photo of Muddy Waters' first permanent drummer, Elga Edmunds. The drums look very funky enough, just...

Re: The Clave Police

How can there be clave police if the clave police are lacking the knowledge of what the concept of clave means?

Re: Did Ringo Scream About Blisters On His Fingers???

It's worth noting that Brian Wilson has been deaf in one ear since he was a kid. He couldn't perceive stereo, so he mixed in mono.

Re: How do I get this weird sound? Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer"

Do you have an extra snare? See if you can get a channel on the mixing desk for just that snare, and load it up with reverb. When the "lie-la-lie" starts, whack the piss out of that snare and there's...

Re: How do I get this weird sound? Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer"

"In an effort to fulfill his love of big natural reverb, producer Halee rang up session drummer Hal Blaine, who eventually found himself standing alongside a large empty elevator shaft inside...

Re: Atlas oversight...

Yes, exactly. Like I said, a design issue. I know single tom mounts exist, I own a couple.

Re: Atlas oversight...

No, this is what I'm talking about:

Ludwig doesn't offer one for a single-tom.

Atlas oversight...

Ludwig offers a double tom mount from its Atlas line. Why doesn't Ludwig make a single-tom version?

The ones I see look nothing like the Atlas design. They're just the basic generic mounts.

I...

Re: Ringo's Drumming: Harder Than It Looks

Les - it's been corroborated time and again that it was, in fact, Richard Starkey who played the drums for the Beatles. He played with them in concert, and he recorded with them in the studio.

Re: Drummers who've inspired your playing

These are the main ones, when I was a kid, these are who I copied from:

Mitch Mitchell
Ginger Baker
Al Jackson Jr.
The Motown drummers
The JamesBrown drummers

Re: Producers killed instrumentalists

Yes, because the producer was almost always also the composer. I've worked for a lot of guys who had the contracts and produced everything right up to the final presentation, even for the TV ads.

Re: New to me Acrolite

I got my Black Galaxy back in spring, and since then it's become my favorite snare drum. It's an intriguing little drum, that speaks with so much character.
