Re: Gigging Mishaps

I went to a country town gig without cymbals.
I went to a winery gig without a bass drum.
And a local gig without floor tom legs.

Re: Brady or Noonan?

A number of Australian builders have more or less taken over where Chris Brady left off. They all make their own shells from Aussie hardwoods. Jarrah is popular for staves because it was used for...

Re: Band names?

There was a band in my town called Jehovah’s Waitresses.
They did a show with another local band called Satan’s Cheerleaders.

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

I heard a band playing Justin Bieber’s ‘Love Yourself’ on Friday.
Since the original song has no drums at all, the version I heard with live drums worked well. I wouldn’t say the original part...

Re: Not having fun playing

Find some songs with beats you can play, put headphones on and play along. The recording sounds so much better than just practicing drums on their own, and keeps the momentum going.

There are also...

Re: Is this crazy?

I tweak my tom and floortom for most venues - one small pub in particular the toms sound dead, so I tune them up a bit until they ‘speak’. In other locations they sound better lower and deeper.

Re: Creative/minimalist kick drum muffling ideas?

I have a folded towel, maybe 8 layers thick, 6 inches wide, leaning more on the batter side.
It’s held in place by two pieces of elastic which stretch between the bottom lugs. Never moves during...

Re: Bass drum mic picking up Toms

My rack tom and floor tom both resonate for a bit every time I play the bass drum. Acoustically, in the room, with no mics or amplification. No-one usually notices during gigs.

The ringing comes...

Re: Songs With Variable Tempo

As an occasional orchestra and concert band conductor, my job in symphonic repertoire is to vary the tempo constantly to suit the phrasing and shape of the music. In slower works no two consecutive...

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

There are some 90’s songs where the original has two drummers, or a basic groove plus tom fills at the same time. Hard to decide what to play live.

e.g Let’s Stick Together, Real Wild Child, Boys...

Re: Rules in Music

Just like 'poetic license', there are no hard and fast rules, but it pays to know the norms or traditional rules for your genre, so that when you choose to break those rules you're aware of what...

Finally sorted my catalina 14" floor tom

I bought a second hand Gretsch club jazz kit six months ago to keep as the house kit in a pub where I play regularly. I tweaked the heads and tuning until I was happy with the sound of all the drums...

Re: What is the most unintelligible instruction given to you by a music director?

Can you sound more modern.

Re: Pearl sensitone bronze snare drum

I have an older ‘elite’ model, 5” deep. Love it. Very versatile, warm sounding, but projects very well.

Re: Progress on the vintage Yamahas

Nice kit, nice pictures.

I did all this a year ago when I got my ‘68 Pearl kit. Everything still worked and dismantled cleanly. I also oiled the inside of the dry shells, lightly sanded the...

Re: Putting band name on kick drum head, with multiple bands?

I just use three different kits for my three bands.

You could try Velcro dots near the edge holding a paper or film logo - probably a rectangle across the middle with a dot in each corner.

Re: Anybody like big bass drums?

The orchestral bass drum at my school is 36”. I’d hate to lug that around in my car. And each note takes five seconds to die away.

I’m definitely a fan of smaller bass drums - I own 2x18’s,...

I read an article on this phenomenon just a few days ago. The reasearcher had a graph which peaked at age 13 or 14, showing that we continue to love and value the music we listened to at age 10 - 20....

Re: What snare di RHCP use

I read somewhere that he didn't use the (1st gen) signature drum for his recordings, that drum was designed later, for live use.

Re: In the studio

The best way might be to find some recordings in your style that have a great mix, then compare your sound with that. Presuming you're right, the other players will hear the difference and realise...
