Re: Meshuggah - now my drumming seems trivial :(

The substance itself wouldnt hold up anyway so I see no reason for people to get upset, but then again I'm just dismissive in general.

Re: Meshuggah - now my drumming seems trivial :(

If you find Meshuggah intimidating then Sol Niger Within will give you nightmares... :)

Re: Marco Minnemann

That first song was excellent for something that was written that night, astounding even. Marco has truly conquered the drums. From what I understand he could be a great prog metal guitarist if he...

Re: The most "influential" rock albums

Destroyer is huge, both Slayer and Death members cited the album as an influence. So essentially two of the biggest extreme groups pay respect to it.(if you consider Slayer "extreme," they're hugely...

Re: The most "influential" rock albums

Great call on Human Duo, that album really did a lot for progressive metal. Other great metal albums include:

Seven Churches, Scream Bloody Gore, Reign in Blood, Everything Metallica (pre Load...

Re: Does "popular" equal "influential"?

Exactly, Bieber is just one example but a good one... he barely writes any lyrics and none of the lyrics written for him were original in any way and aesthetically the music itself isn't innovative...

Re: Does "popular" equal "influential"?

A singular example, case closed. Many argue that Elvis was more influential anyway.

Re: Dylan Elise

Haha... that explains a lot thanks for the information. A big part of the reason I used to like watching his videos was because I got to see some of the blown away drunk audience members doing their...

Re: Does "popular" equal "influential"?

You can be one and not the other. I used to like Travis and Lars before I started thinking critically and I'd be lying if I said Lombardo wasn't a very strong influence early on, but now I'm more...

Re: Happy Birthday, Aynsley Dunbar!

Could have also performed with: Zeppelin, Hendrix, and I think another huge name is escaping me.

Re: Marco Minnemann

It mentioned my two favorite underdiscussed drummers, I had no choice.

Re: Drums easier than other instruments?

This is just a theory, but I'd imagine entry level drumming is easier for many than string instruments, but that's partially because I hit a wall (my pinky) with starting to learn guitar and could...

Re: Favorite Drummer?

Great list Mad. Who's the female who isn't Sheila though? Just curious.

Anyway my favorites include: Agren, Coluita, Gadd, Rich, Mayer, Elise, Harrison, Weckl, Rabb, Carey, Seth Davis, Jimbo and...

Re: The social stigma attached to Metal...

So, flip flops. Sorry about that. Still, visible toes aren't metal and that's a rule.

Works for girls.

Re: The social stigma attached to Metal...

I confused Tabasco with saline solution once. No harm done. I guess I just didn't really understand your analogy that well though, I got it now lol.

Re: The social stigma attached to Metal...

I enjoy that outlook, image doesn't have to be involved at all. Chuck Schuldiner, the frontman for Death would go on stage with socks and sandals to play death metal, didn't seem to bother anyone...

Re: Dylan Elise

I think it's funny how nobody has responded until now given the wording of the OP. Seriously though this guy has been phenomenal since he was 16... Not one other response? Really guys?

Re: For those in cover bands, how much do you stray from the original drum parts?

Quite a bit usually although it really depends on the song. Fool in the Rain is an example of something I'd leave as is, but for songs like Good Times Bad Times I don't see any harm in adding in even...

Re: Undiscovered Youtube Drummer Gems

Since nobody really listens to Exhorder I'm going to just throw Seth Davis out there. There's way more to him than winning WFD, his comprehension of polyrhythms rivals that of Mangini.

Also,...

Re: Marco Minnemann

Oh so there IS another Agren thread. Oops. Anyway, Marco was my favorite drummer to touch metal (excluding Coluita and Bozzio who IMO have insignificant metal output) before discovering Agren so I...

Re: Favorite metal drummer?

All of my absolute favorite drummers to have played in the metal genre didn't limit themselves to it so anyway they're Donati, Agren, Lang, Coluita, Carey, Reinert, Jarzombek and Seth Davis who...

Re: Media players

Outside Apple products, this would be my favorite mp3. (Well really, it's an mp4 but it's 'only' 100$ anyway.)

It's a lot more flexible than an...

Re: Drum noobie - where to start? What to start practicing?

I don't teach but if I were to recommend any particular instructional material it would be Secret Weapons by Jojo Mayer. It goes pretty in depth about grip and hand technique and mastering those two...
