Re: What is your favourite style of drumming?
boogaloo/soul-funk/proto-rock
For me there was a golden age when the early funk and soul guys were hitting big bouncy boogaloo beats (lots of syncopation/16th on snare n bass) and then started to...

Re: Good Reggae Artist/ Music recommendations...
The Skatalites is ska. A lot of the drums is the same as reggae, ie based around a one drop. But the bass lines are different, more like a blues bass line than the very syncopated thing that came...

Re: Ideas for Blues fills
Fills in the electric blues of the 50s - that sort of classic period - are called 'straights'. Listen to Sonny Boy, Howlin Wolf etc and you'll see why - the fills are usually full or half bar...

Las Vegas - kit hire? Small venues?
Hi All, I've got to go to Las Vegas for work from 4 - 8 May, all of which will obviously mean long, lonely hours away from my beloved drum kit. So, I was wondering, does anyone know of any drum shops...

Re: How long from complete beginner to gigging?
Gigging last night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJw7-7ShVC8), 2.5 years in.
I had a nightmare because my bass drum was moving across the floor during the gig, but I guess I'm what you'd call...

Re: LOUD metronome?
I use a Tama Ryhthm Watch with Vic Firth isolating headphones. Sometimes I have to nudge one of the phones off to hear the drums properly

Re: How long from complete beginner to gigging?
Lowdowner, I started (properly) when I was 47. I'm now 49 and I've been playing for 2.5 years. My first gig was a year into playing. But I look back on that now as a very early step, and a faltering...

Re: Bass drum not loud enough
I'm just at the stage of really working on my right foot speed. I've been 100% heel down up til now. What's got me going to fast hits heel up has been building the tempo on tunes that require it...

Re: Drum layoff due to cracked hands
Thanks for all the replies, guys. I was expecting most people to say "technique!" but the hydration, food, temperature stuff has certainly given me food for thought. It's pretty wintery here right...

Re: Is this a paradiddle?
I think it's probably the accenting that's giving it the sound it has. Too fast for me to make out the subdivisions tho

Drum layoff due to cracked hands
Well, not a total layoff as I did 45 mins of foot-heavy practice today, but that's instead of the 2hrs I usually do.
The reason is that hard skin/callouses I've got on my hands have cracked and...

Re: Charity Gig...
I'm thinking not necessarily aligned stylewise. More that there's something about all the acts that's going to appeal to the type of audience you expect, if you see what I mean.

Re: Charity Gig...
Copfest? 999fest? It sounds like the most unappealing gig ever.
That aside, the problem of people buggering off comes, I think, from people lumping bands together that don't fit. You'll not stop...

Re: Was this a false start by Bonzo?
Probably hammered on vodka. While Page was smacked up. And had hardly played together for ages by Knebworth.
I love early Zep but by this time they were in a bad place with all the substance...

Re: How often do you practice? For how long?
1.5 to 2 hours every lunchtime on my kit (1hr at weekends). Then 45 mins doing rudiments most evenings. Band practice every Tuesday. I've been playing properly for 2.5 years.
I envy people like...
