I don't think there's anything wrong with crashing on one, as long as it's not every bar or two. Anything static tends not to sound that good in swing, with the exception of shuffles.

One reason so many jazz drummers tension their toms higher is for the response at lower volumes. Imagine playing mezzo piano on a loose tom. The sound would be floppy and would probably sustain too...

2. What is the left hand phrase? If it always starts on the downbeat, you may not be with the...
