Re: Exercises/rudiments -vs- or solos/excerpts

The good ones are, yes.
Practice rudiments. It is literally expanding your drumming vocabulary.

Re: Is practicing heel-down worth it?

I have no use whatsoever for heel down playing, however heel down practice is beneficial. You want your footwork to feel as natural and second nature as possible, and practicing heel down contributes...

Re: quality of drum sounds to the rest of the band is not important

When I played bass and guitar I was obsessive about a good drum sound. It's inspiring. In my primary band our drummer even wanted me to mix the drums in the studio.

Re: Returning Drummer Aches.

If possible get a simple checkup on your spine, make sure there are no signs of curvature issues. Especially if, in addition to the aches in your hips, you start to have neck aches.
32 is way too...

Re: Bass drum technique

Most pedals I've played, whether chain drive or direct drive, whether playing slow or fast, feel best in the center, more or less.

Re: Who has inspired the most to make people play drums?

That which is correct or incorrect is not Neil himself, but rather his inclusion or lack thereof in one's reply. To include him is correct, to exclude him is incorrect.
Regardless, it was meant to...

Re: Who has inspired the most to make people play drums?

There is no right answer, but there is a wrong one.
If your answer doesn't include Neil Peart, you answered incorrectly.

LOL, yeah because everyone playing single bass is doing something different.

Re: Heel up - arrrgh!

A few of tips.

"Heel up" doesn't have to mean your heel is very high, it just means it is not planted.

Heel up consists of several different motions used for various strokes and speeds. These...

Re: Mixing up pedals for double bass

LOL, I would hope so.

If a 10 year old child can play double bass properly without mix-matching her pedals then so can you. Try and identify the problem and just work it out mate.

Re: Training protocols for increasing speed?

Agree 100% with this.
In fact, the faster I'm able to play, it seems the less I'm relying on those conditioned muscles as the movement becomes more efficient.

Re: Training protocols for increasing speed?

I don't think either of those (very slow vs just below max) is correct.

Very slow will help a beginner with proper form. Beyond that it's useless for increasing speed. Obviously playing at 100 bpm...

Re: Odd time signature songs for beginners

Lots of Tool songs. Good for beginner practice since they take one odd time signature and run it into the ground for 10 minutes.

Re: How do you know when to crash?

True, but also used for accents anywhere in a bar of music. The answer to the OP's question is quite complex.

Re: What sticking do you use?

Different stickings also allow you to play the same fill with different accents, use different voices, and end the fill at different places on the kit. So you not only have your own sound and feel,...

Re: Fast double bass rolls

I think it's mental. I play barefooted, if I play with shoes on it's not that I can't play as well, it's that the only thing on my mind is "I can't feel the pedals" and this somehow does affect how...

Re: Ever have a drumming dream?

Same dream almost every time. Can't get my bass drum pedals positioned. I'm usually sitting about a foot off the floor so my knees are up to my chest and I can't operate the pedals.

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

That's an easily defeated argument anyway. To this day I enjoy the latest metal, jazz fusion, and others. So it has nothing to do with not liking something "new".

I've despised pop since my...
