looseness and rolls/rudis/hands on gigs. in the garage, i'm loose as a goose. on stage, i can keep the beat great, but even if i hear a roll in my head i have so much trouble executing.

Well i guess i took a little different approach then the way OP did it. i basically played along with the metro. 15 was brutal, 10 killed me.

I just checked, the metronome on my phone app goes to 10 (my Korg only goes to 40)... i'm contemplating this ascetic/Zen like exercise........

I believe the hip-hop is based on 16th note triplets (1 a trip a let a 2...) and 16th note accents (1 e & a 2 e & a...) Start your metronome at 40bpm and slowly work to control the up-down motion...

I prefer heel down for balance, but it really is all preference. This Ginger Baker video he says "the only way to play is heel up" - which is not true, but like you said, as long as it doesn't hurt...
