Re: The state of pop music

To look at this from another POV...

The older Pop songs that are "better" than today's songs are just the great ones from that era. We don't remember the vastly greater number of bad songs that...

Re: My physical issues and my drumming

Relax with the generalities please.

Case in point. I am 47, own a successful business, have short hair and have never owned a trench coat. I play styles from rock to prog to metal.
I am also...

Re: Talking to the doctors now....

Unless the doc finds something deeper you are most likely just feeling the effects of aging. In order to maintain youthful levels of strength and vigor you must exercise.

Both strength building...

Re: Drumming and tennis

Same here, my man. I've read most of his works.

I actually first heard about him from an old Modern Drummer interview with Steve Smith.

Re: Drumming and tennis

In any physical activity, there are common traits which greatly improve one's chances of success.

Some of them are:

Hand-eye coordination,
Reaction time
Coordination and movement-based...

Re: My physical issues and my drumming

You have to decide that you are going to beat this physical issue, not let it dominate you. You will NEVER work "around" the issue. You must confront the underlying cause and attack it with a proper...

Re: Silly branding things that shouldn't matter (but do!)

You hit it.

It's as if we all said: "Yeah, let's pay those companies 80 bucks for the right to advertise their product every time we leave the house. "

Regarding drums etc, don't care. Sorry.

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

I agree with you. The tech has bettered everything considerably.

Remember when we used to have to ask people for directions, or stop to find a pay phone? It all seems so archaic now.

Re: Drumming in the pre digital age.

I love DW but, truthfully, I sometimes wonder if spending time on the forum isn't taking away from practice time.

The sense of community is great and the exchange of ideas is great but, as Bo...

Re: Who inspires you the most?

Simon Phillips.

The fact that he has now pretty much left arena rock to concentrate on his jazz playing is inspiring. He's aging gracefully like a fine wine.

How many people in the world are a...

Re: What is your drum setup pet peeve?

Normally a "pet peeve" is ONE thing that bugs you about something. You have a whole pet store going on.

I guess we should all just sound like Ringo or something.

No, you didn't upset me, I just...

Re: How tense are you when you play?

Relaxed but not in a "beer on the couch" sort of way.

Muscles not tense, mind clear but both primed for action.

In both athletics and in music there is a time for relaxation and a time for...

Re: Electronic & Acoustic Drums in the same song

Jack and Diane is a classic song that does this. The fills by Kenny Aronoff in that song jump started his career.

Many pop songs out today now follow that formula of electronics during the verse...

Re: Let down by a drummer with chops but no ability

I definitely see this all the time at metal gigs. Guys who can play 240 BPM but hit the snare in a pathetic weak-wristed motion that sounds terrible and has zero groove. .

But what I also see is...

Re: You and your practice regimen, come clean

I practice on the pad approx an hour a day. Since working with Bill Bachman after my injury my technique is really coming along.

Kit time ranges from 0-3 hrs. Much more on weekends.

Total...

How can I put this kindly?

Re: Thoughts on super fast foot speed

Ok, fair enough. I think you might look into some physical therapy with massage, exercise etc to help out.

If you want techniques that work untriggered, it has to the flatfoot motion in single...

Re: 18" bass drum for rock!

Trying to make an 18" sound like a 22" is is like a guitar player trying to make an ES-335 hollow body sound like a Les Paul.

Re: Playing covers vs. playing originals... or both?

Both are equally valid philosophies or art.

Take, for example, Ludwig's Ninth vs a jazz improv solo over the form of the tune.

You wouldn't say someone was "planning" or "parroting" the ninth....

Re: What makes a good drum room?

If you check out a drum room in a high end recording studio you might notice that the room is either very large or that it is irregularly shaped.

That is because early reflections off of near...
