Re: Counting off the song w/banter

We're always calling him out on it. Imagine if I did it: 'Yeah, I can play like Jabo if I HAVE to but I'm just gonna play Bonham's intro to Rock And Roll in between all those soul and funk songs.'

Re: Counting off the song w/banter

Our bass player plays whole uncalled for bass solos in between songs in a desperate bid to prove that, while he can play the bass parts to Hot Pants and The Boss, he is in fact far, far better than...

Re: Songs With Variable Tempo

Yes, I know all roads lead back to James Brown for me, but you should hear the speed at which he played even his most well known songs live. What may have been 92 bpm in the studio version suddenly...

Re: So long story short, I'm a bass player now

Imagine the new drummer comes in, and you have to show him some grooves, and he thinks, 'Oh for goodness sake. The bass player's a better drummer than me!'

Re: Counting off the song w/banter

James Brown used to do entire songs of banter: Escapism, the longer album cut of Sex Machine. And the grooves on both is in the pocket all the way. But that's next level sh*t.

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

This is the thing. I think it takes a while to realise why we don't sound how a drum part does on the record, and may put it down to our limitations in playing and feel bad about that. But sometimes...

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

Agreed that this is good advice, and something that I always do. If we're working on a new cover, I always listen to that song over and over again, then break it down over and over. I watched the...

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

I honestly think a lot of it is unfamiliarity with the genre, or, maybe worse, someone thinking they know they genre but don't, and you feel like saying, 'How many "interesting" fills do you hear Al...

Re: Dave King's Rational Funk ~ thoughts? opinions? comments?

My favourite is the riff about how to get a gig with The Black Crowes, by playing wholly inappropriate jazz chops and admitting you don't even listen to their music. Oh, and how to get a gig with...

Re: Covers that don't work with the original drum part...

As someone who is steeped in soul and funk music, I absolutely agree with this. But just to clarify, are you saying that you hear people needlessly shoehorning a Cold Sweat type groove into soul and...

Re: The ubiquitous LM400

I used to got to a soul and funk workshop (in fact, three members of our band grew out of it), and the guy who runs it is always struggling to get drummers, or at least a drummer that can play in...

Re: The right tools for the job.

Ha, hey, Bo. When I said, 'There I said it,' I was making fun of myself for having a four piece set-up but hardly ever using the floor tom. I always bring the damn thing, though! There was a time...

Re: The right tools for the job.

I play exclusively four-piece. That said, I rarely even use the floor tom. There, I said it.

Re: Almost lost my cymbals

Man alive. Gutting. I wonder what happened to that snare?

I luckily had a really helpful chap at the Victoria station lost property office. He asked me who my favourite drummer was. I said Clyde...

Re: Almost lost my cymbals

Hope they're all all right, mate. I once left my Ludwig Supraphonic on a train. Didn't realise until half hour later because I had a niggly feeling that I should be holding something! Luckily, again,...

Re: The "Evolution" of the Ludwig Breakbeats/Questlove Kit

I haven't used mine in a while, but I do know one of the lugs has cracked on the bass drum. It bugged me that the Ludwig logo was slightly crooked, so I lined it up and I as was tightening up the...

Re: Just an observation

Man, that's great to know. I'm just so in awe of the guy that I'm afraid I'd be really star-struck, or else ask loads and loads of questions.

Re: Just an observation

I remember we'd discussed Dennis Chambers before J man; it's great that he's out and about in town and is up for guys buying drinks for him.

Re: Just an observation

Whoah! I'd be in awe. I've always particularly loved his playing on the live Maceo Parker album he played on, Roots & Grooves.

Re: Just an observation

I was born in 1969 and the bulk of my listening is Sixties and Seventies soul and funk, music before my time but the music that really moves me. When the UK had the big Indie scene going and you were...

Re: The Art of Drumming - TV Show

As I said to Steve, I honestly feel this is the documentary against which all other documentaries about any instrument will be measured. It's inspiring, moving, the production values are excellent...

Re: Most Random bit of equipment that's failed at a gig

This! I also had a beater fly off during the first 10 seconds of the first song of the second set. I compensated by making my left-hand more busy and my band mates didn't even realise. I check the...

Re: Your weirdist gig?

We once played a Masonic dinner. We knew we had to play quietly during their dinner, but we were told we were still too loud. In the end I changed down to 7a's, which were barely touching the snare,...
