Re: Miking bass drum WITH port for first time. Tips where to start?

No, not laziness. It's the same amount of effort either way. I have miced both with and without a port in the reso, but with a port always sounds better in a LIVE situation with other noisy stuff on...

Re: Miking bass drum WITH port for first time. Tips where to start?

In general I get the best results pointing the D112 into the port, but without any of the mic actually breaking the plane of the head. I turn it a bit toward the beater impact point.

Some head...

Re: question about sound techs/guys

Exactly. Some days you can't make a band sound good, you can only make them sound louder.

Re: question about sound techs/guys

There's a reliable way to automate effects sends to kill them between songs, but I doubt it was being done at the OP's gig.

(It involves using the bass and/or key signals as key trigger inputs to...

Re: The Blue Man Group

I worked (as venue audio tech) on a show by one of the touring groups a few months ago. They are playing live, but are following a click track to stay synced with the video that makes up much of the...

Re: Crescent cymbals... AKA Screw all you meaningless peons?

I love the smell of an overblown sense of entitlement in the morning.

Re: Do you take cymbals/bass-pedal to a venue that have a drumkit?

As a backline provider, I've seen the full range. Even had a couple of events where the drummer showed up without sticks thinking he'd just use whatever is there.

Here's my take on it:

Re: Strangest gigs

They start about 4:30 in the afternoon, and they have the mighty "Popper 9000" that they built. The first photo shows the poppers, that then feed into the big bin shown poorly in the second photo:

Re: Strangest gigs

I played the drum kit (barely visible to the right) in that pit, for free, about 30 nights/summer, for 5 summers:

The all-volunteer band plays 30's and...

Re: From the other side - how to prepare your kit (& yourself) for PA.

By the way, just a reminder that micing techniques that work wonders in the controlled environment of a studio often suck when used for live sound reinforcement.

Re: Best Drum Covers Online? What's your take?

In case this is what you meant:

I just 'discovered' this one the other day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L44EsXysEg0

Bo Eder - If Sade's drummer played for RUSH!

Very cool, Bo.

Re: From the other side - how to prepare your kit (& yourself) for PA.

One addition, a problem I run into way too often when wearing my soundguy hat:

BRING YOUR OWN DANG CARPET.

It's an important part of your kit, don't expect someone to have one there for you....

Re: ? for soundmen

(Disclaimer: 30+ year soundman and system provider)

Openers can sound poorly compared to the headliner for many reasons. The primary reason is this: It takes talent to mix a band, both at FOH and...

Re: Legal question

(Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer)

In some states, a verbal contract is binding. Proving that there is one can be expensive.

Did you get paid in any way for your services? If not, there may be...

Re: have you ever played in wind conditions where you or your set was blown down?

I'm not certain how that end of it came out. No one was really at fault. I know we lost about $25k worth of audio gear that day.

Re: have you ever played in wind conditions where you or your set was blown down?

Not my kit, but it was my sound system.

There was a full band set up on this stage before the 80MPH gust front came through.

Either your black or white wire are disconnected inside the connector at the mic, or you have the wires swapped between pins 1 and 2 on the connector at the mic. You do have the male connector...

Re: kills/amuses me what people ask for drum stuff on ebay

Either it doesn't sell, and the seller learns that its worth more to him than to anyone else. Or it does sell, and we all learn that someone else wanted it more than we did.

Basic economics.

Re: Homemade Snare Drum, made out of a PVC-pipe!

I live in a part of the world where it would be very easy to get a slice of oil well casing pipe and have it edged and drilled.

Whether I want a 75# snare drum is another story...

Re: RINGO Peace & Love PHOTOS!!

It's a stage screw. It was added by a stagehand on the Ed Sullivan Show to help ensure that the kick wouldn't get pushed off of that huge drum riser. It's not screwed into the drum at all, just gives...

Re: Craigslist ad for Pearl kit- way off base?

Not ridiculous, it just means the kit is much more valuable to the seller than it is to anyone else in the world. It's always possible that there's a buyer out there that wants it that badly, which...

Re: loudest snare?

By far the loudest snare in my collection is a Tama Starclassic Copper snare. It weighs as much as three normal snare drums, so that probably has something to do with it.
