tune the bottom head down a tad, should cut out some buzz. if that doesnt work, fiddle around with the reso head and see if it has any affect. not sure about the off center snares if im honest.

i have a full set of the mutes and unlike the above poster, i quite like them! mine are by an estranged company, i cant even remember the name now, but they cut out a lot of rebound out of the drums...

i know of a guy who does this to his drums, however he swears by it. personally, i highly doubt theres a significant difference if you wax or not. if caddy is right, then it may not be worth risking...
