What's the sound of GUM wood?

It's been mixed with maple by Gretsch for decades, and now DW are mixing it with mahogany and cherry, but what does it do to the sound? Obviously shell construction, heads, tuning and hardware make a...

Re: what's the effect of central lugs on the sound

It's a while since I've been on here and I'm always amazed by the collective wisdom and desire to share knowledge. Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.

Re: what's the effect of central lugs on the sound

Thanks everyone. Here's another thing I heard (relating to central lugs) that needs your collective wisdom. Evidently, if you remove the rubber pads from underneath the lugs (that are there to...

what's the effect of central lugs on the sound

Pork Pie and C&C, amongst others, are using this retro deign with a single central lug at the point I always thought was essential to the resonance of the drum (I think I learned that from an old 90s...

Re: BB Clone

I did a blind test between my BO badge 70s black beauty and my Pork Pie Big Black Brass in a drum shop. Everyone went for the Pork Pie.

Re: New Look Mapex Saturn

Sadly this is why Mapex will never attain the status their sound deserves; it's hard to believe that such a tacky design can sound so good. You don't build a credible musical instrument brand based...

Re: USA Custom or Collector's Series

Hey Scott, If you really have to change kit now, and on a budget, pick up a used Mapex Saturn. It will do anything at a great price.

It sounds to me like now might not be the right time to change....

Re: USA Custom or Collector's Series

These 'either/or' threads are interesting, but tough! As every drum brand has professional endorsers who play jazz, funk, alt rock, fusion and gospel on the same kit I think it's hard to make the...

Re: looking 4 exotic expandable drumkit manufacturer

They look like the sort of sci-fi drums that TV shows in the 70s thought they would be making in the future... and they were right! They are the 'Blake's 7' of drum kits.
I want some!!

Re: Gretsch USA customs with triple flange hoops... or is that just sacrilage?

Thanks everyone. The Gretsch kit is coming on Tuesday - hoops to follow at the end of the month when the store get some 12" 5 lug in stock. Test results to follow...

Re: To trade or not to trade

How much do you really use your 16"? The maple custom 14" can go pretty low.

You will never have the chance to get your hands on new Maple Customs again, and they will keep their value much better...

Gretsch USA customs with triple flange hoops... or is that just sacrilage?

I love the Gretsch tone but always wish there was a bit more of it - so in my hunt for a new kit I was thinking about replacing the die-casts to open up the sound (I prefer the triple flange feel and...

Money no object advice please

What do you think would make for the loudest, roundest and most resonant kit when tuned medium-high (say 12" tom pitched around D). I want the drums to sing with a wide dynamic range (and not max out...

Maybe try this

I have one on my 12" DW Classic tom (on a DW 6000 snare stand). It makes a big difference even over the DW mounting system.

What a shame we'll have to listen to these beauties with 1000 dB of drum cacophony in the background - see you at the show on Saturday!

Re: DW Classic Series Kits & Snares

I play 24, 16, 12. I inquired about a classic snare and was told that DW now makes the classic series snares them with maple/mahogany shells rather than the maple/poplar.
The right snare will depend...

If you want a brass sound, the Pork Pie black brass are brilliant drums and fantastic value for money. In a blind test with a 70s Black Beauty (same heads, same snares, same tuning) 5 drummers said...

Removing or shaving down re-rings!!!

Hi folks. Before I start I know an answer to this question is 'buy a new kit', but I'm interested:

I have a DW Classic series kit. It has huge re-rings. I like the kit's timbre but wish it had a...
